While everyone was scrambling to book cruises or plan trips to various tropical locations for spring break, I couldn’t have been more at ease knowing I’d be making my four-hour drive south to North Palm Beach, Florida — a little place I like to call home. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cruise surrounded by friends and new adventures, but there’s nothing like getting some R&R in the comfort of your own backyard. Though there’s so many reasons why going home for spring break was the best decision I could’ve made, I’ve narrowed it down to nine.
1. Home-cooked meals.
Living in a dorm can be tough, especially because there isn’t a kitchen. You're left with only microwave meals or a hike to the cafeteria (where the food is questionable). Going home and getting a home-cooked meal made with love trumps anything and everything.
2. To give my body a detox (and my liver for that matter).
A week of giving your body a break from late night Taco Bell trips and going out will make you feel on top of the world and ready to kick-start the second half of Spring semester.
3. You get to sleep in your own bed.
If you live in a dorm like me, you have to deal with the awfully uncomfortable twin beds. There’s nothing like going home to a comfortable, queen-sized bed in your own room.
4. Spending time with family.
When you first go home, it’s like there’s a new puppy in the house. Being with friends is great, but it’s good to get away from time to time. It’s nice to spend some quality time with your siblings and being able to catch up, but not staying too long to where that new-puppy feeling wears off.
5. You actually get to take a break.
With so many all-nighters spent studying and constant stress about school, this is one week that you can brush all your worries aside and binge-watch as much Netflix as you’d like.
6. You don’t spend any money.
When you’re at home, your bank account gets to take a break. Whether it’s going out to dinner or a shopping spree with mom, it’s nice not to have to take out your wallet.
7. Going to all your favorite local restaurants.
There’s nothing like hometown bagel shops and hole-in-the-wall finds where you can really indulge!
8. Sleeping in.
There are no alarms and no plans. You can choose to sleep in till 2 p.m. or wake up at 9 a.m. to get your day started; the glory of it is that you get to choose.
9. You get to see your pets.
Need I say more?
Although I may have gotten a little bit jealous from seeing all the SnapChats from everyone’s endeavors, it took one glance at my surroundings, and I couldn’t have been happier to be where I was. Being at home was just what I needed so that I could end this Spring semester with a bang and say hello to Summer!
