Going home for winter break is a strange time for college students. On one hand, you're excited to see your family and old friends. On the other hand, you don't want to leave the new friends and the new home you've created at school. Nonetheless, students usually start winter break with high expectations, only to realize how misguided those expectations were. Here are some common misconceptions that college students have about their ideas of winter break:

Expectation: You’ll go to the gym in your free time to avoid gaining holiday weight.

Reality: You lie in bed and watch Netflix in your spare time, only leaving your bed to use the bathroom or get more food.

Expectation: You’ll enjoy time spent with your family, whom you’ve missed very much.

Reality: Being in a house with your crazy family after spending months away from them is driving you up a wall, and you can’t wait to escape.

Expectation: You’ll get home-cooked meals every night and escape the usual takeout and dining hall food.

Reality: Your mom tells you that you’re old enough to cook for yourself, and you end up getting takeout anyway.

Expectation: You’ll catch up with all your old friends from your hometown and go out all the time.

Reality: You realize that you only have a couple friends from home that you still keep in touch with, and you rarely leave your house.

Expectation: You’ll do fun winter activities and enjoy the snow.

Reality: You don't have any snow to enjoy because it's 50 degrees in December.

Expectation: You’ll have so much time for relaxation and doing whatever you want now that classes are over.

Reality: You have to work almost every day.

Expectation: Holiday dinners will be filled with good conversation and warm welcomes from family members.

Reality: The dinner conversation steers towards why your grades aren’t perfect, what you plan on doing with your life, and why you’re still single.

Expectation: You'll get a break from doing laundry and cleaning now that you're no longer living on your own.

Reality: Your parents still expect you to pitch in with the housework, and it almost seems like they want you to do so now more than ever.

Expectation: You'll be able to stay out as late as you want with your friends because you're an adult.

Reality: You still have a curfew, and it's at least 3 hours earlier than what you had hoped.

Expectation: You'll hate being home because you have a temporary loss of your freedom.

Reality: You hate having to abide by your parents' rules, but you still enjoy being home with your family (even when they drive you crazy).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
