A few years ago, I realized that the less I spoke out on political, social and moral issues, the more popular I became. Unfortunately, that principle still stands today. However, God, through Scripture, helped me to understand how to remain an effective, poignant witness for the gospel without scaring unbelievers off with jargon that they might not understand. I learned that posing questions to those individuals and allowing them to arrive at their own conclusions was an extremely potent tool. I still don't know why I’m surprised that these techniques of gospel-sharing were such. Jesus didn’t really beat around the bush. He always had an answer, usually a very concise one. His answers were always sharp, always shocking. He never wasted words. Those who asked questions of him were often met with another question, rarely a definitive reply. My point is that Jesus knew how to confound the skeptic. He knew how to shut the Pharisees up. And he could do it with less than 10 words. For lack of a better word, Jesus was a little sassy. He spoke and truth was his weapon. Truth isn’t popular. And I’m about to tell it.
So, by proxy, I’m about to be very unpopular.
You’re free to disagree, but I think Scripture is pretty clear. I’m afraid I can’t remain silent about this presidential election. Let me preface this by saying that I don’t care about the party system. I care about integrity, compassion, leadership and intellect…I care about the character of those running for president. What does experience matter if that experience is not guided by humility, compassion, and wisdom? The simple answer is: it doesn’t.
As a Christian, I believe that our country is best served by one who believes in the triune God of the Bible. I believe that a true Christian is bound to the high standard that God sets for His children. I believe that he will be held accountable to God for how he leads this nation. Although I can’t judge anyone’s heart, I believe that this judgement is rather correct—Donald Trump is not a Christian. Hilary Clinton—is not a Christian. To me, that automatically makes my decision much more difficult. However, when I see my alternative, it truly frightens me.
Let’s ignore the fact that Trump a narcissistic scoundrel who doesn’t understand the mercy of Jesus and publicly admits that he doesn’t feel the need to ask God for forgiveness…ever. I then turn to the Democratic party, represented by a woman who believes that babies can be aborted hours before their births, a woman who cares only for power and prestige, a woman who has lied to the American people, time after time. Let me be honest, I was not impressed and definitely offended by the jargon used at the Republican National Convention. However, I was downright disgusted with the ploys and tactics used by the speakers at the DNC. Elevating the slaughter of millions of human babies under the guise of reproductive health. Parading a liar on stage and calling her a saint. Posing a child of illegal immigrants for their own agenda. Bolstering their plans with a self-professed sexual predator.
I think there are thousands of corrupt people in our system. Not to be pessimistic, but I think the morality of the American government is gone as a collective whole. That ship has sailed. That ship has sunk to the depths of the deepest ocean. Without divine intervention, our government is full of deceit. Why are we shocked? Scripture is chock full of examples of corrupt kings, politicians, leaders, and yes, every day ordinary folk. We are broken people. And our government is certainly broken being run by broken people. I’m not going to tell you who to vote for. I can’t do that. There is no one righteous.
But I can ask this: Who would Jesus vote for?
We have a woman whose treason and dishonesty cost people their lives, we have a narcissistic, strip-club owning man, a closet Democrat, we had a Democratic Socialist sell-out whose ideas of a utopian society were dangerous and confusing to young voters (who just seem want a free college education.) Things don’t look good. Before you malign me for being a Trump supporter, let me explain. I don’t want to endorse either candidate. But I love my country too much to refuse the right that so many have fought for on my behalf. We can all fight for things we believe in. We have to fight for the right things. We have to fight for truth. We are at an impasse. Remaining silent will allow the greater evil to triumph. If you have no hesitations, more power to you. But be sure your convictions are guided by truth. This is still a democracy. And we have to fight to keep it that way. Democracy is the only kind of government that lasts. History proves that. However, we must continue, as Christians, to believe that God is still at work. I believe he has already given us over to our passions. He has already let go of the reigns. Morality is relative here. But I still believe that he has a greater purpose. Whoever becomes the next president of the United States of America, God is still ultimate. We can rest in the fact that, though the governments of the world may crumble, God is still on His throne. When you cast your vote…remember the weight of justice and freedom. Let your conscience be guided by the greatest ruler of all.
