I believe we all have heard the unfortunate claims made towards UNC's athletic department from 2012 up until very recently this past year. My favorite is every N.C. State fan's comment towards their loss on November 28: "At least our players go to class."
Well, Mr. Angry Man in the Red Shirt with a Redder Face, I would like to give you some reasons as to why I attend a football school and am very proud of it.
As of right now, Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6:02 p.m., Carolina is ranked in the top ten in ESPN's College Football Playoff Rankings and number eight in the AP Top 25. UNC is also standing at eight in the Coaches Poll and the NCAA College Football Power Rankings.
Carolina is remaining with eleven successes and two losses, one to South Carolina as their very first game of the season and the other to Clemson last night in the ACC Championship. It appears that Carolina football is making its comeback. To throw out some mind boggling numbers, this season was the first time they have had two extremely high scoring games (Duke 66-31 and Miami 59-21) since 1914, and the last time they went 11-1 was 1997.
This powerhouse team is led by star players quarterback Marquise Williams, running back Elijah Hood, wide receiver Mark Hollins, and of course, star coach Larry Fedora who has thankfully signed to at least seven more years of coaching the Tar Heels. In passing yards, the team averages 266, and in running yards, it stands with 229.7, leaving Carolina ranked at 33rd and 18th in these stats. Not to mention we gave Clemson a run for their money in the ACC Championship with a finishing score of 37-45. The game ended with a questionable offsides call after the Heels recovered their onside kick causing Carolina to kick again with Clemson gaining possession and running the clock out.
Forgetting logistics, the air of Kenan Stadium is enough to grant Carolina the title of a "football school." Having been in different sections of this arena, every part exemplifies an exuding amount of spirit and faith in this team. With every single "Rah Rah Carolina" and students desperately trying to spell the name as fast as the song, it is obvious that no one loves the school as much as the students. The alumnae arrive, dressed in their finest Carolina blue, with daughters on their shoulders in mock cheerleader uniforms and their sons yelling along with the crowd, and give the students some competition when it comes to school spirit. Take a walk on Franklin Street during game day, and all you can hear is talk of the team. Or stroll through Frat Court's parking lot and listen to the bands and camaraderie in the air.
Okay, so maybe we're not ACC champions and maybe playoffs are not in our future, but I am thoroughly convinced that not only do I attend a football school, but the best school in the world.
You know what they say about Carolina girls. Go Heels!
