As a college student you become familiar with Greek life, or at least what you think Greek life is. Everyone recognizes the groups of well-dressed, young adults everywhere on campus and participating in all the school's events. How does one get themselves as involved and into an organization like this you wonder? The answer to that is pretty simple. All you have to do is go through their recruitment process. During this you are likely to meet many other students who might not have as many friends as they would like to have, some who are looking to build their resume and leadership skills, and others who are yearning to be a part of something bigger than themselves. There are numerous amounts of positive benefits that come from being a member of the Greek society. It is up to you to find your niche at college and you will never know if Greek life is the place for you if you do not try it.
Schools offer many different sororities and fraternities that can correspond with all the different types of students. According to TheSororityLife.com, how you join a Greek organization varies from campus to campus. Generally, there is something called Formal Recruitment and during this time you are introduced to all the sororities or fraternities your school has. If you are torn between two or more different organizations, then there are counselors that will help you find the best fit for you. Then before you know it, your new organization will turn into your home away from home.
“Over nine million students nationally are involved in the [G]reek community,” says StudyMode.com. Going Greek is a fantastic way to make friends. Also, as you go on through life, you are more than likely to run into, work with, or meet someone that was a former member of the same fraternity or sorority. Alumni are always around and eager to help guide and advise younger brothers or sisters in whatever direction they wish to go in. If you are an active and involved member that wishes to go into a field that an alumni is in then they are also available to provide you with letters of recommendation and advice for future job opportunities.
Community Service is also a major part of being in a sorority or fraternity. Most of the time you will see members going above and beyond the requirement and donating a lot of their time to different causes. The University of Missouri-Kansas did a study and they found that Greek life members collectively volunteer at least 10 million community service hours a year. Another aspect about being a participant is that there are academic standards that must be met. Greek life encourages students to go to study hours together and there is always going to be a brother or sister in the library seeking a study partner. Another helpful aspect is that there are numerous people in your chapter that have the same major or ones who are either in or have already taken the classes you are enrolled in. Many chapters even reward their members with gift cards who receive As on tests and projects. They know that a little incentive here and there is nice and a good way to motivate their peers.
Dues are a major factor in Greek life. Anti-Greek life people will make statements like, "You are paying for your friends." What a lot of people do not stop to think about it that some kids struggle socially when they get to college and they need to throw themselves into something that forces them to open up. Being a part of a sorority or fraternity allows you to meet people that come from many different backgrounds and more often than not you are able to find at least one thing in common with every one in your chapter. Dues also go into supporting your chapter's philanthropy. All of the philanthropic events that everyone on campus is invited to, would not be able to happen if every member did not pitch in. Having lifelong friends is priceless and your dues do not even measure up to all the good things that come from paying them.
To bring this to a conclusion, being involved in Greek life is way more than being able to wear the letters on your shirt. It is a great way to make friends and get involved with your community. If you are having trouble on deciding if you want to rush, talk to a member. One of Greek life's most favorite thing to do is recruit, someone will be more than happy to try and help you find your home away from home even if it is not the same as theirs. Greek life pushes you in all ways possible, it gives the chance to become a part of something bigger than yourself and the opportunity to contribute your efforts and make a difference.
