Why Go Greek?

Why Go Greek?
Moe Ellis

Greek life can be found on college campuses across the country. On these campuses, fraternities and sororities can be viewed in two extreme lights. It seems that many people tend to think of Greek life as ridiculous and a waste of time. However, others view it as a lifestyle and a large part of life. Deciding whether or not to go through recruitment round can be intimidating, but here is why I whole-heartedly suggest it.

Deciding to go through the recruitment process was exactly what it sounds like ... a process. The entire thing began months before I even moved to campus with asking for letters of recommendation from alumnae of various sororities. I thought this was the most pressure I had ever felt, but then came Rush Week.

Rush Week was one of the longest, emotional weeks of my entire life. Sitting thought numerous thought-out presentations given by the many houses on campus made me think about how strenuous the other side of Rush must have been. Having long days full of putting on a happy face and acting like the most approachable person in the world was mentally and physically exhausting, not to mention sprinting to all the houses to make it on time for parties. However exhausting it may have been, this is the week I learned how to communicate effectively and personably.

When the end of the week finally came around, I knew exactly where I needed to be. Luckily for me, that sorority also knew where I needed to be ... and that was with them in the big, white house on Maple.

After Rush came my time as a "pledge." During this time, I met some of the coolest girls I have ever met. The more I went around and met other girls in my pledge class, the more I realized how authentic and unique they each were. I have met girls from all over the country who, by some crazy coincidence, all came to the same school and rushed the same sorority. I can't help but be amazed at how particular God's planning is, especially in situations like these. I have never before seen a group so excited to be a part of such a great community of girls.

After pledgeship came initiation and official membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma, Gamma Nu chapter. Since initiation, I have met some of my best friends. I met a group of girls who are in love with the Lord and inspire me to be a better person every day. Without my sorority, I may not have found these steady, God-fearing friendships that have led to become who I am today.

I have also had numerous opportunities to serve my community and be involved in things bigger than myself. Helping others so close to home puts everything in perspective. Life is so much bigger than just you. Humility in this aspect was a critical lesson that I would not have learned if not through kindergarten student at a local elementary school.

Greek life may not be for everyone, but for me, it was worth the pain of Rush Week.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
