Because Netflix has yet to post the latest seasons of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Shameless, I had no choice but to return to my high school guilty pleasure, Glee. A television show about an underdog high school glee club that deals with challenges like budget cuts, bullying, and slushy facials, Glee is undoubtedly most famous for breathing new life into popular and classic songs. Although there are a few songs that they shouldn't have messed with, (ahem, the Rocky Horror Glee Show disaster of season 2) the incredibly talented cast had many successful performances, and there were even a few that I enjoyed more than the original. In no particular order, here is a ranking of twelve my favorite Glee performances.
1. I Feel Pretty/Unpretty (Born This Way Season 2 Episode 18)
At this point in the show, Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Rachel (Lea Michele) were far from friends, but by the end of this TLC/West Side Story mash-up, the pair reach an understanding: no matter how put together a person looks on the outside, they have their own insecurities and demons to sort out.
2. Shake It Out (Choke Season 3 Episode 18)
I personally prefer this song to Florence and the Machine's version, and I find that this song often gives me strength. I love the harmony between Mercedes, (Amber Riley) Santana, (Naya Rivera) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), and I wish that the writers had them sing together more often.
3. How Will I Know (Whitney Season 3 Episode 17)
I'm a sucker for four-part a cappella harmony, so I especially loved this Whitney Houston tribute. Each voice brought something different to the mix from Mercedes's (Amber Riley) power to Rachel's (Lea Michele) emotion to Santana's (Naya Rivera) raspiness to Kurt's (Chris Colfer's) falsetto.
4. Rose's Turn (Laryngitis Season 3 Episode 18)
The Gypsy classic performed by broadway greats like Patti LuPone and Bette Midler, Rose's Turn was basically Kurt's (Chris Colfer) coming out of the closet song. Even though he told his father, Burt (Mike O'Mally) in the fourth episode that he was gay, this was the perfect way for Kurt to air all of his pent of emotion and hurt (and let's face it, the light-up KURT sign was an added bonus).
5. Losing My Religion (Grilled Cheesus Season 2 Episode 3)
Finn's (Cory Monteith) brutally honest rendition of R.E.M.'s song is the epitome of this episode as the cast's various religious beliefs are put to the test when Kurt's (Chris Colfer) dad, Burt (Mike O'Mally) is hospitalized after a heart attack.
6. Born This Way (Born This Way Season 2 Episode 18)
Yes, this is the second song I have from the same episode, but I just love this episode's message so much that it makes me want to make my own flaw-t-shirt.
7. Landslide (Sexy Season 2 Episode 15)
Even though this performance has nothing on Stevie Nicks, I love the added three part harmony and the tension between Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) as they try to communicate their feelings for each other through song.
8. We Found Love (Yes/No Season 3 Episode 10)
This is the cutest proposal ever. Hands down. No dispute.
9. Don't Stop Believing (Pilot Season 1 Episode 1)
Let's face it, before Finn (Cory Monteith) came along, the glee club sucked, and Terri (Jesslyn Gilsig) was right for making her husband, Will (Matthew Morrison) become an accountant. But after the New Directions perform Don't Stop Believing, Will knew that he had started something special and knew he had to stay.
10. Valerie (Special Education Season 2 Episode 9)
Naya Rivera's Santana rarely had a chance to shine as both a character and a singer until season 2's sectional performance. Her husky voice coupled with Brittany (Heather Morris) and Mike Chang's (Harry Shum Jr.) dancing makes this performance unforgettable.
11. Toxic (100 Season 5 Episode 12)
The only song that I have past season 3, because let's face it, the show kind of goes downhill after most of the original cast graduates, I love the way the "unholy trinity" sings this song. The trio have only performed together a few times since their audition song, which is a shame, because I love how their voices blend together.
12. Don't Rain On My Parade (Sectionals Season 1 Episode 13)
Okay, I'm sorry, but we're all thinking it: Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is obviously the most talented and passionate member of the glee club, and this fact caused quite a few rifts between glee club members, but her rendition of Don't Rain On My Parade clinched the New Direction's win at sectionals in season 1.
