Thanksgiving. A day for remembering what you're thankful for, family, and for stuffing your face. Perhaps this is what you picture when you think of Thanksgiving. A warm and inviting scene of family and friends and lots of food. And I picture this too. But what I actually do on Thanksgiving varies vastly from the "perfect picture." Maybe you're like me and you have an untraditional Thanksgiving. Which is ok, better, it's good. Unconventional only feels weird or uncomfortable until you realize that there are others out there doing the same thing. Since Thanksgiving is around the corner I've decided to share my "traditional" Thanksgiving. While I used to enjoy what most would consider as a "traditional" Thanksgiving, I no longer do and I was forced to figure out what to do now. So what do I do? It might sound dumb, but I enjoy watching my favorite Thanksgiving episodes of different shows because I enjoy watching and observing others. So here is a list of what, in my opinion, are the best Thanksgiving episodes to watch if you're looking for a Thanksgiving to be a part of. Side note: this list is in no particular order because I could never pick a favorite!
1. The One With All The Thanksgivings
There is no doubt about it. When it come to Thanksgiving episodes, "Friends" does it best. This is a fantastic episode! We get to see college Ross and Chandler, and Monica flirting with carrots! Everyone remembers their worst Thanksgiving and we get to enjoy all of the anguish. And best of all? Monica's head gets stuck in a turkey and this is how Chandler says "I love you."
2. The One Where Underdog Gets Away
As I said, no one does it better than "Friends!" This one is pretty great too. Everyone already has plans for Thanksgiving, until everything goes wrong. Each friend finds their way back to Monica's where they all celebrate the holiday together. All of the potato dishes are represented, Ross gets to talk to his little fetus, and hilariously enough, Underdog has escaped the parade! This episode makes the best out of the worst Thanksgiving!
3. The One Where Ross Got High
Ok, last one I swear. But seriously, check out "Friends'" Thanksgivings because they are the absolute best. This one is where Rachel cooks her famous trifle. We also get to watch Phoebe's blossoming love for Jack Gellar (eew). But the best part is the end where Ross and Monica yell at each other, revealing each other's secrets, and the rest of the friends reveal some of their own.
4. Thanksgiving
This is my favorite moment from "New Girl's" "Thanksgiving." I love the effort everyone gave, and how, ultimately, it didn't matter. We get to find out that there is a male version of Jess and that Schmidt is out of control, but for some reason, CeCe is strangely attracted to his OCD. While their Thanksgiving might have been disturbed by a dead body, they still made it work.
5. Turkey Day
If you're not familiar with "Boy Meets World," then you have not lived! This is a great episode because this show deals with uncomfortable situations. Shawn and Cory win a turkey and stuffing and decide to share the prize by having their families share Thanksgiving. Neither family is comfortable with this. The Hunters think the Matthew's are too good for them, and the Matthews feel that the Hunters might be a bit disruptive. Both families learn from each other and this episode really gives a homey feel to the holiday.
6. A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving
In this specially-themed episode, the Gilmore girls attempt the impossible: 4 Thanksgivings in one day. The girls are in a bind when they realize that Lane, Luke, Sookie, and Emily are expecting them for dinner. If you know those two, you know that only everything can go wrong, but end on a happy note.
7. Belly Full of Turkey
I love this episode! Lily goes back with Marshall to Minnesota to meet "the family." We get to see Marshall in his natural habitat and we realize that Lily might die if she gives birth to Marshall's Viking child. Meanwhile, Ted, Robin, and Barney start their day at a soup kitchen and end it at a strip club. I love the combination of traditional and weird in this episode, and this show, like "Friends", does classic Thanksgiving episodes!
8. Giblets for Murray
You may not be familiar with this classic, but this episode comes from "Mad About You." In this episode, a young married couple, Paul and Jamie, attempt to host the perfect Thanksgiving. They attempt to appease everyone and make it perfect for everyone, until they realize this is their Thanksgiving. They get rid of any extraneous ideas and keep everything they wanted and just as the table is reset, they retreat to the kitchen to bring the turkey out, only to discover their dog has eaten the bird. Problems continue to arise, an innocent turkey gets thrown from a window, and everyone finds out the truth. This is a great episode because it shows what happens when families mesh and why your dog shouldn't go in the kitchen!
9. The Miracle of Thanksgiving
So I'll end this list with a classic, a show most people are familiar with, "Full House!" I LOVE this show! And in this episode, they attempt to create Grandma's Thanksgivng, but it doesn't exactly come together as planned. The boys even try to buy a turkey to spare D.J.'s feelings. This episode is poignant and classic, but also shows that everything doesn't have to be perfect.
Hopefully, these episodes will get you in the mood for the day and give you some laughs. While I may not have the "traditional" Thanksgiving, I still enjoy mine and watching someone else's idea of it. To me, nothing is better than a sitcom Thanksgiving. And as a safety reminder from Joey, don't forget to wear your turkey pants!
