I guess you could say Daft Punk has been working quite hard throughout their career to truly give life back to music. Being such a big fan of the legendary electronic music group a good friend mentioned to check out their documentary, “Daft Punk Unchained." What can I say but wow? Immediately after I found myself nostalgically looking back into their past listening to old tracks and hits.
The documentary tells the story of the French duo Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, from their formative early years playing around in the electronic music scene, all their way up to their stardom. Forming in the nighties, they disbanded their rock trio to start a new project with more of an electronic sound. Daft Punk's debut record, Homework, was released and incorporated techno, rave and house elements that took the world by storm and contained such a fresh new feel for the dance music scene. Music videos for singles such as “around the world” began to put the group on a bigger stage. Not too long after, the wearing of masks began and they gradually developed a more lavish aesthetic.
In the year 2001 their groundbreaking album Discovery was released. It was notably a big shift for the group once again because they transitioned from their Chicago house style to something a little more edgy and creative. This record had a more disco and synth pop element. A high charting album with hits such as “One More Time” appeared also spawning unique music videos with futuristic like qualities. Their popularity began to change for the better along with their look, which would be described as robots with elaborate techno masks.
The excitement only continued with another album in 2005
titled “Human after All” which featured singles like "Technologic." The duo
continued to lay out great tracks and also they began to play more live shows
such as at Coachella. The duo then introduced their monumental pyramid stage design that would put the world into a state of
shock at its debut live show in the United States. This was a monumental moment because it was the
first time rock artists got to see what all the excitement was about and they
finally understood the electronic music craze. 40,000 people squeezed into a tent meant for only 10,000
people. The pyramid essentially set the standard for the EDM genre making elaborate LED
light displays and infectious dance music at staple. Ultimately we can say that Daft Punk
can be credited for bringing the world into the next phase of dance music and
as always we hope they will once again take to a live stage for us all to witness in awe.
