No matter who you are, what you take on, or what school you go to, college is a tough and stressful time. Being involved makes it even worse- the more involved you are, the more overwhelmed you are. But hear me when I say that it is so rewarding too. So if you have a lot on your plate, don't get mad at yourself for committing to so much because it will benefit you so much in the long run. Here are some things to keep in mind if you feel like you've spread yourself too thin.
1. It's okay if you're tired.
And by tired, I mean all the time. You're having trouble staying awake and paying attention during your morning classes, you need caffeine just to survive the day, and you have a hard time concentrating at work or practice. I totally get it because that's the story of my life. The best thing you can do is absentmindedly write down what the professor says and study the notes later in the day, when the words will sink in. As far as work and practice go, drink some coffee and focus on one task at a time.
2. Manage your time wisely.
Time management is everything! That hour- long break between classes that you spend scrolling through your phone can be used to write that essay you've been putting off. That two-hour time window between class and work can be spent studying for that big test you have tomorrow. If you do as much work as you can in your spare time, you'll have more time to unwind after a long day and maybe even get some extra sleep.
3. Let people know in advance about your conflicting schedule.
Because when you're a busy person, there will always, always, always be conflicts. Being an accounting major who works and is on the colorguard and in a sorority, I'm constantly having to choose one important obligation over another. Be sure to let people know of this in advance. For instance, if you have to miss an event for work, or vice versa, let the person in charge know as soon as possible to save yourself the stress of people being mad at you.
4. Just breathe.
Because life is good, and it's all going to be okay. You're still in school and haven't been fired or kicked out of anything, so you're obviously doing something right.
