Finals are coming up and it is always a stressful time for people studying. You need to make sure that you take care of yourself and not only get what you need to do done, but take a breather too. Don’t be afraid to step away from your work for an hour or two and reward yourself. Here is a short list of things you can do to distance yourself from your work so you don’t feel so pressured.

1. Short breaks can be rewarding and will help you push through what you need to do.

When I had to wrote sections of my Junior I.S. I was able to push through by reading comics for every paragraph I wrote, and the next thing I knew I had written five pages. Little short breaks that you can take in between can really help with what you might be doing.

2. If you’re getting stressed out by the amount of work you have, take a break.

Even if you haven’t gotten much done, you’re not going to do much else if you can’t motivate yourself. Clear your mind of stress and take out time to spend with people you want to be with. But of course make sure that you will get back on track and get your work done.

3. Do what you need to make yourself comfortable, take your time and set yourself in a nice room with a warm drink.

Don’t worry about wasting time to take care of yourself. If you need to shower or make a cup of tea to help you wind down don’t be afraid to do so.

4. Even if you have a lot of work do and it’s still super late you need your sleep.

Put your health first and go to bed. You need to sleep to let yourself relax and give your body rest. All nighters can help you get through you work, but you need to recognize that you need to take care of yourself because if you don’t you’re going to feel worse the next day.

5. Avoid coping with alcohol or any kind of substance to help you get by.

You don’t want to grow dependent on something to help you get through your work. I know it can be stressful to try and get through your studies, but you need to recognize that it’s not healthy to push through in that way.

I know that this can be one of the hardest times of the year, but you have to remember that your mental health is important and that you need to take care of yourself. Get what you know you can get done first and work as hard as you can, but remember that you need to give yourself room to breath. Take a second to remember that there are plenty of people who care about you a lot and that you can go to them for support if you need it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
