Most of us are broke college students wanting to go to a getaway destination over break, but we just don’t have the money. Needless to say, it’s imperative for us to get away for our sanity, for our youth, for adventure, for whatever it may be. My solution for getting away and on a budget is day trips. Despite the boring drive through Florida, there are plenty of places to explore across the state that are worth your time and short-change.I’m a South Florida girl, therefore my
expertise lies in that neck of the woods. It’s been a yearly tradition now for
me to drive down to the keys, spend the day there, grab a bite, and make my way
back to Miami by night. Call me crazy, but some key lime pie shops by the keys
make it worth it (I mean, it is a treat named after that location anyways.).
There’s also the Coral Castle near Homestead,
in South Florida. It was built in the 1920s and has one of those rich histories
involving sickness and unrequited love. Tickets for adults are only $15.
On the opposite coast of South Florida,
there’s also the iconic Naples pier over the Gulf of Mexico to watch the
sunset. You might as well take chance of the Naples Bay Water Shuttle for only
$5 to navigate your way through town.
There’s also the Corkscrew
Swamp Sanctuary, which is the gateway to the Western Everglades in Naples, for
only $6 (with your UFID).
And if you’re up for a deserted exploration, 20
miles from the nearest road and surrounded by dense Everglades brush, you can
get lost deep into the wilderness at the former plantation of an alleged
murderer killed by a mob of scared neighbors, Edgar Watson (I’m about it, but
definitely consider asking hiring a guide to not get lost there!).
But if Naples doesn’t appeal to you too much
and you’ve had enough of the swamps, head over to Fort Myers on the third
Friday of the month for the Music Walk. You can also find Lover’s Key State
Park with plenty of amenities, for an $8 fee per vehicle and a $2 fee if you’re
on bike or walking, or you can paddle through the 190-mile trail at Great
Calusa Blueway (I strongly suggest a GPS or something for this!).
If you’re more into the arts, St. Pete has the
Dali Museum and tickets go for $15 with your UFID. St. Petersburg also lifts
the open container law (if you’re of age) and closes down the streets in downtown
for live music on “First Friday St.Pete,” And if that’s not your cup of tea, there’s
always St. Augustine with plenty of founding sites to explore.
And if you happen to be stuck in Gainesville,
don’t moan and groan too much. There’s a lot of destinations nearby, some even
as close as Williston. Devil’s Den Cave offers scuba diving and snorkeling
amenities and it’s just a short drive away from campus (visit site for pricing
details).
There’s obviously Ginnie Springs and Lake Wauberg too. And if you
just want to get away for a little change of scenery and to grab a bite, check
out Micanopy, it’s a neat little town that looks like it’s out of a movie.
After all, this is the Sunshine State and
there are plenty of towns to dine in and explore from coast to coast. There’s
something for everyone. So, realistically, you can get away and not burn a hole
in your pocket. It all starts with a Google search…
