A Letter To My Generation

Get it together Generation Z.

A Letter To My Generation
Rian Avin

I am so fed up with the generation I was born into.

I feel as if a lot of people my age are the same. As a group, we are addicted to finding our worth in the way we are perceived by others. Our popularity is based on how many Instagram likes we get on our most recent selfie, and our relationships are defined by how much we post about our partner and how long we've been together, and our likability depends on what we do and don't share on Facebook. Social media has overtaken my generation.

Another thing that bothers me is the overwhelming amount of people who have a desire for temporary happiness. I'm in awe of the amount of people my age who are just seeking for a hookup instead of finding someone to build a life with, or the kids in college who chase the high of drugs and alcohol. These things offer us happiness for only a short period of time. They WILL NOT bring you permanent benefits. Hooking up and being "friends with benefits" may seem like you're just having fun, but I would much rather be serious with someone, truly get to know them and be a companion. Knowing things like how you like your tacos, and how you can't stand the beach, appeal to me way more than any hookup ever will.

We are known to generations before us as the kids obsessed with our phones.

Please don't think that I am shaming my generation, that's really not the aim of this article. I just want my friends to understand that we can not let the stereotype set by the people in our age bracket define us.

Don't be the girl who constantly worries about who follows her on Twitter, or how many likes your profile picture got on Facebook. Post HOWEVER MANY SELFIES YOU WANT. DO NOT care about what others think of you. Do what makes you happy. Don't waste people's time. If you want to be with someone, tell them. Don't be the boy who just wants to "Netflix and chill". Invest in people. Intrigue someone through simple conversation. Involve yourself in affairs that matter to you. Don't sit back and let the definition of the typical "Generation Z teen" define you. Be who you are wholeheartedly. Don't hold back because you're scared to upset the status quo. Fall in love with someone. Make forever friends.

Don't be fooled into thinking temporary things bring forever happiness.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
