As I was scrolling on my Facebook timeline, this article popped up and I immediately read the entire thing and when I finished, I turned to my boyfriend and said, "They obviously didn't do their research because this article and completely and utter wrong."
I was mad. I was mas because Ms. Rutledge, there are more than two genders. This is a scientific fact.
If you would have done your research correctly, you would have known that the word you are describing in your article is actual sex.
Oxford Dictionary describes sex as either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and most other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions.
Your blanket statements are frankly dangerous and wrong. Putting everyone in either the male or female box is in the past, we have the Internet. A wonderful tool that sometimes we use in a negative way and sadly, you used it negatively when you wrote this article. It was uninformed and sad.
But the root of why I was really mad at this article was because of how strongly you felt based on your research that there is not more than two genders, you even claimed your IQ dropped. My IQ dropped reading your article.
Gender is NOT physical.
Sex is.
Sex is what goes on your birth certificate which most of the time is male and female but that is not always the chance such as people who are born as hermaphrodites. Gender is what you identify as beyond that birth certificate and has nothing to do with your physicality.
I don't want it to seem like I'm bashing you. But your use of incorrect terminology was tragic to say the least. Please next time when you write an article like this, do your research accurately.
