Being gay in today society is like being a palm tree in L.A, we're everywhere. We are fabulous, in tune with who we are and extremely misunderstood. Although we know exactly who we are, stereotypes and cliches have painted us to be every pretty girls puppy. I, for one, am extremely confident in being an out and flamboyant Valley gay; it's a huge part of my life and I take pride in the way i was born. If you are willing to accept us, you should be open to understanding us and loving every gay drop of blood that runs through our veins. Part of being in this very common melting pot of individuals means everyone wants their cut, but we are not a super cute jumbo Chanel bag; we are human and this is a small portion of very common gay boy problems.
1. "So who's the girl and who's the guy?"
I blame gender roles created by the media entirely for this question! What is that supposed to mean? Why does anyone have to be the girl or the boy? Why can't we all be equal? Woman with woman, man with man, woman with man, palm tree with palm tree? Life is too short to label people's commitment. If someone's personal life does not concern you, don't feel the need to ask. Human beings are born with the right to live their lives to the fullest not the right to question a person's journey.
2. Proper sexual etiquette...
Sexual and etiquette should probably never be mentioned in the same sentence, but there is something to be said about it as a gay man. Sex isn't something to take lightly in the gay community because we have to worry about so much more than the average person. For example HIV, multiple STI'S and even as simple as incompatible partners. Although the hetero and homo community have multiple things in common, there is a higher risk in having sexual relations for us gays. As you know, we're not just poking the straw into a coconut were trying to knock them off the palm trees.
3. NOT ALL GAY FRIENDS ARE A GOOD MATCH (we don't need a play date)
Typically, there is always the one gay friend in every group and we tend to be very territorial over "our girls." Territorial because we feel as if our relationships are so strong, which is usually true, but there is always one bad seed in every tribe. The bad seed does not acknowledge us a human beings, but rather their accessory ( THE GAY BEST FRIEND ). Do not try to feed us off to your sorority sister's gay best friend! Just like you we do not vibe with every person who comes our way. We are not dogs and we do not need a play date!
