In the digital age, we have access to gaming through a plethora of devices – game consoles, PCs, smartphones, tablets, etc. Many games come and go, but few are here to stay. When a game takes the world by storm, we can't help but wonder when or if it'll lose its momentum.
1. Flappy Bird
This game – with no plot whatsoever – will forever live on in our hearts and minds (as it since has been removed from the App Store). The objective of "Flappy Bird" was to navigate a bird between green pipes without hitting them. This seemingly monotonous game proved to engender much frustration and competition as players obsessively aimed for high scores.
2. Candy Crush Saga
Arranging matching candies in rows of three or more became a legitimate hobby when Candy Crush took over the world. As the levels increased, the requirements for passing each level became more difficult as well. We were introduced to timed levels, viral chocolate and annoying jellies. All we could do was hope for more striped candies. At its height, this game appealed to all age groups – children, parents and grandparents alike.
3. 2048
This game was all about strategy and endurance. The goal was to combine like tiles in order to reach the number 2048. The ambitious player would even try to reach 4096. It's safe to say that as a past and present avid player of 2048, I will not be forgetting my powers of "2" any time soon.
4. Trivia Crack
As the title implies, Trivia Crack was quite an addicting game. This game pitted users against each other in a test of knowledge in categories like arts, science, sports and entertainment. But that's not to say luck did not play a role. The feeling of a victory on Trivia Crack was unlike anything else.
5. Angry Birds
The original "Angry Birds" game took the world by storm when it was first released in 2009. This was the dawn of mobile gaming apps, and "Angry Birds" was the king. There was nothing more exciting to do than to launch a bird into a den of pigs. Looking back on it now, I still don't quite understand how this game became so addicting. The "Angry Birds" franchise went on to create many more games and even released "The Angry Birds Movie" in 2016.
6. Pokemon Go
The latest trend everyone's been talking about: Pokémon Go. Could this be the cure for childhood obesity? Only time will tell. Will it forever be this popular? There's no denying the fun in this game that's only increased by augmented reality. But how far is too far? Players have already trespassed private property, have been hit by cars, have been robbed and have stumbled into crime scenes – all while playing this game. Cue the lawsuits.
