I'm just going to come right out and say it, I'm a "Game of Thrones" fan. It is the best and worst show ever, and it's ruining my life. I would actually like to blame my uncle, who got me started on this show. I spent the night at his house one night and he bought the first two seasons on iTunes. There was no way that I was going to watch 20 episodes. So I only watched the first two. From that moment on, I was hooked. I couldn't stop watching. I needed my fix every Sunday at 9 p.m. And what was built up in excitement, soon turned into anger and hate.
(****THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS****)
It all started when Brandon Stark, a high-born of Winterfell, was pushed from a window high up on a tower and became paralyzed. Who would be so cruel? Jamie Lannister, that's who. Then, to make things worse, for the Stark family, Eddard Stark, Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell died. Rather, he was executed. When his friend, King Robert Baratheon, bit the dust, Ned (Lord Stark), was supposed to rule the Seven Kingdoms until Joffery, his son, was of age. Well, Cersei, Robert's wife, had different plans. I always knew I hated her. Ned finds out that Robert's children aren't actually his kids; plot twist, right? They are actually born of incest between her and Jamie.
Death is a common trend in this show. Every character you like dies. Take Rob Stark, for example. He wants to avenge his father, so he rallies his bannermen and goes off to war with the Lannisters. Rob promises to marry one lord's daughter, falls in love with a different girl, marries her, and everyone dies. Along with Lady Catelyn Stark. That's the Red Wedding in a nutshell and also the worst day of my life (not really).
Not everyone who dies is worth getting mad over. Like when Joffery gets poisoned. Greatest day of my life. When Tyrion kills his father Tywin. Another great day. The point is, I'm not sad when characters I hate die in this show. But it's far too rare that they do. In addition, the hardest death that fans have had to deal with was when Jon Snow, the bastard son of Ned Stark, was killed by the men of the Night's Watch. I swore I would quit watching if anything bad ever happened to him. The wound is still fresh. I need a moment...
In all fairness there are characters that do grow on you, though. Tyrion and Jamie Lannister were some of my most hated characters, and now, I'll be mad if they die. Jamie has really grown on me since he lost his hand. He has the will to make right his wrongs. But there are those characters that you used to like that you now hate: Theon. Theon Greyjoy, had so much potential until he betrayed Rob Stark and took Winterfell. It all went downhill from there.
In all, the now six seasons that are out, are not good for my health. My Sundays start off so great until 9-10 p.m. That's when things get ugly. My blood pressure rises and my anger wells up inside of me, and I just want to break things. I will eventually need counseling because I get that upset. I know what you're thinking, "Javier, it's just a TV show. And if you get that angry, why do you watch it?" I watch it because I have to know how it ends. I don't quit things I've started. Does Daenarys ever take back the Iron Throne? Does Jon Snow come back to life? Will there be and end to my agony? Does everyone drop dead in the end? These are questions I need to be answered.
