Valentine’s Day is coming up fast. There is so much commercialism and a lot of people really miss out on the best part of the holiday- which is celebrating love. What better way to celebrate love than to revel in all the fierce lady friendships you have in your life Leslie Knope style. She even goes to say that celebrating female friendships “should be a national Holiday.” With Galentines Day, you can do just that. Galentines Day is a Valentine’s Day celebration coined by the TV show Parks and Recreation in 2010.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to celebrate:
1. When should you host it?
FEBRUARY 13th! Luckily in 2016, this date lands on a Saturday! Leslie hosts her celebration every year the day before Valentine’s Day. Of course, you can throw your Galentine's Day celebration whenever you want though!
2. Who to invite?
Invite every lady that you have a fierce lady friendship with. This can be your best friends, your co-workers that make your job bearable, your mom, or even your neighbor that is always there for you with a cup of sugar. If she’s a lady and positive to your life, add her to the invite list. This holiday is all about supporting and showing love to the special ladies in your life that you might not get to tell them how much you love them on the daily.
3. What to eat?
Make sure to party with food. In Parks and Rec, they celebrate over breakfast but maybe having a potluck later in the day is more your speed. Breakfast for dinner is cool too. I mean, why would anybody eat anything besides breakfast food?
4. Activities?
Have some fun activities and crafts to do. You can make your favorite Pinterest craft or paint nails or make feminist anarchy posters. It’s really up to you and your lady friends on choosing all of your favorite activities.
5. Music?
Why not build a playlist of female empowering anthems for this special holiday. Add some Bikini Kill or “This is What Makes Us Girls” or “Just a Girl”.
6. The Main Purpose?
Make sure you let all the ladies know how great and important they are. Loves will come and go but what is really important is the friendships that will be there to build you up and give you more compliments than you know what to do with. (Plus you need someone to give you advice on your new date outfit or the haircut you want to get next week.)
If you are single or in love, Galentines Day is the perfect time to leave your S.O. at home and come hang with the people that will always be there for you- your girlfriends. As Leslie Knope says “My lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.” What better holiday could you need?
Happy Galentine's Day!
