Formal Recruitment is an exciting time for many sorority girls at every University. Recruitment can be a stressful and scary time for potential new members who are planning on joining greek life, especially if they don't consider themselves a "girls' type of girl."
Personally, I never considered myself a "girls' type of girl." I grew up with an older brother and lived in a neighborhood of boys. I never understood the benefit of having tons of girlfriends, or better yet, sisters.
I gained 100 sisters in one day by going through recruitment. In one short year, I have learned numerous things that can only be taught by a sister.
1. Loyalty:
Through thick and thin, your sister will be there. When you're wrong, she'll be there to support you and keep you accountable. And when you're right, she'll be there to celebrate the victory with you, no matter how big or small. She's there at 2am when you finished "Grey's Anatomy" and all you wanted to do is cry, or when you need a laugh to cheer you up after a bad day.
2. Home Is Where Your Sisters Are:
Your sisters will become your best friends, partners in crime and your lifeline. Going home for the holidays will start to feel like you're a guest in your own childhood home, because your sisters are your family. Your sisters will be there when you're home-sick. They will be there to celebrate your accomplishments, and act like mom when you need mom.
3. You Understand Each Other:
You and your sisters will have a special bond, you will connect on a surface level, and then a level that no one else understands except your other sisters. From funny moments, inside jokes and just everyday life, you'll be able to glance at one of your sisters and know exactly what they're thinking.
4. You Are Never Alone:
No matter what the circumstances, your sisters will always be there for you. They will love you unconditionally when you are hard to love, and will hold on and cherish you no matter what.
5. It's Not Four Years, It's Life:
Even though we only have four years of college, that doesn't mean that we only have four years with our sisters. Sisters are for life, and you will meet sisters in many aspects of your life even if they weren't from your particular university or pledge class. Being a part of a organization leaves a thumbprint on your heart that you carry with you forever.
Ultimately, joining any Greek life society will give you a support system through college. It created a home away from home when you're away at college, and is the best decision you can make when entering university.
