Every new year we ride the same ride and convince ourselves that this year will certainly be better than the last. In doing so, we create a list of things we are determined to accomplish.
You know, things like finally starting that gym membership we've been dwelling on or cutting off that toxic person or relationship that we honestly should've let go months ago. Don't be swayed though, these resolutions can come in physical forms as well. You'll slowly start to see people change their hairstyles, alter their hair colors and some go as far as to even making body modifications. All to reassure ourselves that these small but meaningful changes are ones that will transform the course of our year. It typically goes a little something like this..
January 1st - We create a list of resolutions
By January 31st - We are sticking to our goals, feeling good better yet -- ecstatic about life to come.
February 1st - We've gotten slightly off track but never fret. We're determined!
By the end of March - We've abandoned most of our resolutions all while somehow still convincing ourselves that we will one day get back to them.
It's not a shock that we tend to forget about these plans. In the moment of renewal, we are excited and we understand that with the New Year we want new things but, we tend to get so consumed with day to day activities that we forget. Most of the time it isn't always intentional it simply boils down to time management and dedication.
So, how do we fix this?
I'm not sure actually, because, I will be working right along with you guys on this one. My thinking is that maybe instead of focusing on so many small term goals, we limit them and alternatively channel our energy into two-semester goals. Where do we want to see ourselves in 6 months and most importantly what do we have to do to get there? This may involve little steps like eating better, studying harder, enhancing our sleep schedule and procrastinating less.
If we have less to focus on, we can place more of our efforts into goal enhancement. 2018 was a great year but I along with the rest of you am committed to making 2019 an even better one. With this, it will take time, energy and patience. Set your goals and work hard towards them! Newt Gingrich once said, "Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did." Life will certainly lead us astray but we as individuals have to be focused enough to know that we can't give up.
All in all, We got this, guys! Let's get out and show the new year who's really winning!
