When I grew up, "Full House" was a staple in my household. I would try to convince anyone and everyone to stay up until 4 a.m. in order to watch the hour of "Full House" that was on Nickelodeon. As I grew older, "Full House" was my go-to show and I am not ashamed to admit that I own every season on DVD and have watched them multiple times (I even had "Full House" Sundays during freshman year of college).
So, what is so special about "Full House?" Well, for me, I grew up with it. "Full House," while cheesy in most aspects, contains great life lessons along with some good family laughs. It seems to be more and more difficult these days to find family-friendly shows, and "Full House" is the primary example of a family-friendly show that instills important values in children from a young age.
Here are the top 10 reasons why "Fuller House" makes a '90s kid smile from ear to ear:
1. The theme song and intro bring back memories.
"Fuller House" takes the original and catchy theme song of "Full House" and revamps it. Sung by Carly Rae Jepsen, it’s not quite as good as the original, but it gets the job done and easily gets stuck in your head. My favorite part of the intro to "Fuller House" is when they take original videos of the cast in their younger years and compare them to the cast all grown up. It allows the viewer to experience the nostalgia of "Full House" while seeing that the cast still looks really good!
2. It's easy to binge-watch on Netflix (yes, Netflix, I am still watching).
It took my family two days to watch the 13-episode season of "Fuller House." We watched four episodes one day and nine in the other. It's easy to say that as long as the episodes keep playing, I’ll keep watching.
3. The two shows have two of the greatest TV dogs: Cosmo and Comet Jr. Jr.
Comet was a much loved dog on "Full House" and he gets a nod in "Fuller House." Steve owns Comet Jr. Jr. and his puppy Cosmo steals the heart of DJ’s son. In "Full House" the children begged to be able to keep the dog, and Cosmo becomes a part of the family in "Fuller House" the same way. Who doesn’t love a cute golden retriever puppy?
4. It takes place in same house, but with modern updates.
Danny Tanner graciously gives up his iconic home to DJ, Stephanie, Kimmy, and their children to grow and live in. Just as Danny and his family grew and shared many memories there, he wants DJ and her children to do the same. While the house has the same classic feel, very reminiscent of "Full House," it does have modern updates to make it DJ’s own home.
5. The cast has been a "family" on and off set from 1987 to the present.
One of the much-loved aspects of "Full House" was the chemistry the cast had. They were truly a family on and off set and that shines through in "Full House," as well as in "Fuller House." I mean, who didn’t want to be part of the Tanner clan growing up?
6. It takes a few digs at Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
As many of us know, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen turned down the chance to star in "Fuller House" for unknown reasons. Some say they didn’t want to be in the spotlight, others say that they wanted to focus on their careers. No matter the reason, "Fuller House" pokes some fun at the twins for refusing to film in a way that is playful and will get a laugh or seven.
7. It's a revamp of classic "Full House" values and cheesy jokes.
The best thing about "Full House" was the cheesy, yet important family values that each episode instilled in the viewers. "Fuller House" accomplishes the same goal. While the children are all grown up, with the show focusing on DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy, the show took a dramatic turn from three men raising girls to three women raising boys. This change can be seen in the topics of the shows, which revolve more around feminine things. However, for me, this change did not stray from the core of what it means to be in "Full House."
8. It has some famous one-liners.
Throughout the entire run of "Full House," many one-liners became famous. Each character had their own lines that were expected in each episode. Well, "Fuller House" came through and gave each character his or her time to shine in this way, too. There was no short supply of "you got it, dude," "have mercy," or "cut it out." No matter how many times these lines are said, I don’t think they will ever get old.
9. It has original cast appearances.
The original cast of Danny, Joey, Jesse, and Rebecca make comebacks throughout the season, but all in good taste. The surprise appearances are not annoying, nor do they come across as though the actors are trying to live out their glory days. The surprise appearances add to the show and it makes the viewer smile to see the reunion.
10. There's the return of Steve, who was every girl's first crush.
My favorite thing about "Fuller House?" The return of Steve. As I grew up, Steve and DJ were the epitome of #relationshipgoals. DJ, however, did not end up with Steve and married a firefighter instead. With the tragic loss of her husband, DJ gets a second chance at her first love, and my heart could not have melted any more. His quirkiness and love of food returns as he tries to win back DJ’s heart. It's easy to say that I am Team Steve all the way.
