My little sister is two years and eight months younger than me. Most people with little sisters all grow up the same way. They are thrown into all the same actives, made to wear the same thing and for the most part go on playdates with the same people. My sister and I were no different, we did all the normal “sister” things. I am not going to lie we did not get along and she used to get me in trouble a lot when I was younger. When she became a freshman in high school and I was a senior I realized she wasn’t just my little sister she was also one of my best friends at that time.
For starters, she is basically like a second closet for me. While some friends don’t want to share their clothes she always will. Her style is ten times better than mine, so it is always fun to go steal some clothes when I come home on breaks. She is brutally honest about how everything looks, which even though I want to strangle her sometimes it helps me look better in the long run. We always will go and borrow each other's things before events just because for some reason we think they are going to look better than they did previously. It is great, though, to have someone to figure out what to bring on a trip or where to something special if you need the advice and no one else is around to give it.
Secondly, my sister will always go grab a meal or at least get takeout with me. We used to have a habit my senior year where we would get Caribou together before school almost every morning. Now, when I come home we will go get coffee some mornings, but we really love going to our favorite places to eat when we are bored and just want to hang out. Her favorite places normally include chicken fingers, she is such a picky eater, normally though there is a way around it to get a meal we both want.
Lastly, even though she gets annoyed with me texting her and calling her she still always finds time for me. I won’t forget surprising her one weekend and coming home. She just stayed up talking to me until 3 am just because we hadn't seen each other in a while. Even as different as we are, which if anyone knows us we pretty much are opposites, we somehow get along better than we ever have before. I know she will always be there for me and I would for her. She is honestly more mature than me sometimes and will tell me when I need to get a grip on life, which is more often than I would like to admit.
Little sisters do really make for the best friends. They do all the things that your friends would do but constantly find a way to go above and beyond. You can’t get rid of them because they are your family so you might as well embrace what you have and become best friends with your little sister.
