Maybe you've been hearing the term "Friendsgiving" thrown around lately, whether on social media or in reality. Well in case you haven't figured it out by now, Friendsgiving is basically the Thanksgiving celebration with your friends instead of family. And as someone who just experienced her first ever Friendsgiving, I can tell you it's amazing. So here are a few reasons why everyone should experience the great event known as Friendsgiving.
1. You can show off your cooking skills
An undeclared rule of Friendsgiving is that the host is in charge of the turkey (and sometimes the gravy) and nothing else. Which means the rest of the celebratory dishes and desserts are taken care of by everyone else. Which means you can finally prove to everyone that you, in fact, can cook a mean pumpkin pie. Make sure to take pictures to proudly send to mom.
2. No hectic holiday traveling
Since Friendsgiving is usually held days before the big Thanksgiving, there is no highway traffic jam to dread or boarding time to plan for. In fact, the farthest you'll probably ever travel for your Friendsgiving is 20 to 25 minutes tops. The closest, right next door. So forget that early rise-and-shine deal, put away your road rage, and relax.
3. No pressure to impress
Whether you're the host or one of the lucky individuals attending, one of the best parts about Friendsgiving is that anything goes. Seriously. Don't worry if fine china and dishware are out of your budget and/or lacking from your cupboard, paper plates will work just as great! No turkey-inspired decorations? Again, no worries! Friendsgiving is about celebrating the unrelated individuals close to you. Chances are, they know you don't have any of that stuff and are most likely in the same boat.
4. No awkward small talk
Let's face it, getting together with family you haven't seen in a while can lead to awkward conversation starters revolving around your school choices, career choices, and, well, all the choices. With your friends you can skip right over the "getting to re-know" you questions because in all honesty, they helped you make half those decisions.
5. You're with your friends
Okay so you're not with the family, and maybe you won't be seeing them this Thanksgiving, but hey, you're with people you love just the same. These are the heroes that cried with you when you got homesick, celebrated the small things over coffee, helped you gorge on late-night takeout, shared stories, got together for cheesy movie nights, and helped you find a home away from home. So go ahead, enjoy Friendsgiving, and remember to tell all your friends just how thankful you are for them.
