The first thing I heard going into college: "Whatever you do, NEVER room with your high school best friend. It'll never work out."
Well, here I am, a first semester sophomore in college, living with my best friend. Not only that, but over the summer we signed a lease for a house that we are going to be living in together our junior and senior year.
Now, I admit, this girl and I weren't that close in high school. We met each other the summer going into 7th grade because we both joined the swim team. We were the only two seventh graders on the team, completely terrified of the upperclassmen, so we kind of had to join forces and become friends. Sure, we had our ups and downs throughout middle school. I mean, who doesn't? We spent some time apart, trying to figure out our best swimming events and slowly figuring out who we are. Once we got to high school, however, it was a whole different ball game. It was us against the world. I can never forget those endless nights of Chipotle dinners, surprise visits to either my work or hers, and the laughter. It was a literal "Where have you been all my life?" moment. It was amazing how we were able to live without each other, much less get into fights with one another, before that.
Then, it came time to choosing colleges. Both of us applied to the same college, early decision. The day we both found out, almost at the exact same time, that we both got in was probably one of the highlights of my senior year. It was an amazing feeling. Neither of us had a doubt in our minds that we would love living together. And so we did. And we do.
To all of you who are terrified with living with your best friend in college, don't. Because neither of us went into the rooming process terrified, I can tell you that. Being able to wake up and go to sleep right next to my best friend is one of the best feelings ever. I am so thankful for this wonderful person in my life. I can't wait to spend the rest of my years in undergrad with her.
