Musicians are the coolest, ya know? If they weren't, most children wouldn't grow up with unrealistic dreams of being pop stars or members of famous bands. However, the term “musician” has a much broader meaning than the stereotypical red-carpet walking singer. Small-town trumpet players and undiscovered garage bands are just a few of the examples that are often overlooked when people think of musicians. Not every musician seeks fame; that is often a shallow misinterpretation. Music helps people feel, connect, and relate. Connecting music to fame draws away from the humanness of music.

You meet a lot of people in your life. If you ever get a chance to be friends with a musician, I highly recommend it. Don't just go seeking musicians to be friends with, but if you encounter a musician you actually want to be friends with, do it. Not only do musicians often have the best personalities, but they also are typically very down to earth. If you enjoy music, then you will see there are many benefits of befriending anyone who plays it.

Firstly, there are constantly jams going. Whether it's a new song in the working, practicing old songs, or listening to Spotify, you are rarely ever left to sit in the silence. If the silence is impending, your musician friends have your back.

Secondly, you always know when and where the shows are. Musicians network and meet other musicians. So if they aren't playing a show, they know someone who is. Local music is always an awesome experience, and the people at the shows aren't afraid of being whoever they want to be. Being around confident people makes you more confident, and then you start to feel more comfortable being who you want to be.

Third, feelings are expressed not hidden. If musicians have something on their mind, you’ll know. Either it will be stated rather blatantly, worked into a conversation, or there will be a song written about it. Music is often based off of emotion, and what better emotion than upset? Another part of that is that musicians are good at expressing how they feel. The songwriting skills transfer over to eloquent expression of precisely how they are feelings. There is less mumbo-jumbo and confusion when musicians express themselves than when us normal people do. However, you can always learn from the ways they choose to present their emotions.

Fourth, they know the come-up on music before most people. If you enjoy knowing music other people don't, and listening to famous people before they become famous, musicians are there. I don't know what kind of sorcery they use to find these undiscovered treasures, but I want it. However, sharing music is a great bonding experience, so I guess I’ll let them keep their secrets. Musicians also share unfinished songs with friends which is super flattering. It feels really good when a person trusts you enough to share their personal music with you.

Music taste and personalities are major components of most people’s lives, and I don't know why people don't connect through those more often. If you don't have the same tastes as another person, don't give up on them. Vastly different personalities often balance each other better than similar personalities do.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
