9 Things I Learned From My Freshman Year Of College

You learn so much about yourself your first year in college. You really grow from all the new and different experiences you only encounter your first year away from home. Here are just a few things my freshman year taught me:

1. You'll miss home way more than you ever thought you would.

Even if you live right down the road from your parents, you will miss your bed, your shower, and home-cooked meals. Make sure to make frequent visits if you have the chance.

2. Staying in at night is O.K.

Even though FOMO (fear of missing out) is very real, it is perfectly fine to skip out on a party here and there. Trust me, your body will thank you.

3. The library is a great place to study.

I didn't step into club Mid until finals week of my first semester because it was intimidating for just a little freshman like me and I had no idea where to go. But I had an older friend show me all the great studying spots, and I'm so glad she did!

4. Staying fit is hard, but attainable.

The Freshman 15 is a scary thing. Luckily, most campuses have a UREC that's free for students. I highly suggest grabbing some friends to make working out more bearable. They also have group classes that are usually free, fun and are great workouts!

5. Go to office hours.

Don't be scared of your professors (even though some of them are just outright terrifying). A lot of times in class, you will be very confused and have no idea if your professor is even speaking English. Make appointments with them so they can help you with any troubles you have.

6. One more drink is almost never a good idea.

Nine out of the ten times you drink, you don't need another watered down, terrible-tasting mixed drink. You will have rough nights (and next days), but you will learn your limits soon enough!

7. Relationships will go through some adjustments

Not only with guys, but with the people you were super close to in high school. It's okay; people change. Also, dating can be difficult in college, but remember, if it is meant to be, everything will work out the way it's supposed to.

8. GNO is a must.

Girls Night Out is a necessity. Going out with just your girl friends is extremely fun. Sometimes you just need a night to dance and sing in the bar with your closest friends without any boy drama.

9. Enjoy every day of freshman year.

Trust me, it goes by way faster than you think. Do things that make you happy. Study hard. Don't stress. Meet new people. Be nice. Be happy.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
