Mostly of what I experienced this year.

A Freshman Year Reflection
Sebastian Voortman

Whew. It’s been hell of a year. I didn’t even realize how much I’ve done, been through, and learned this year. It went by so fast. I remember move in day like it was yesterday and NOW I’M STRESSING ABOUT MOVING OUT. Anyways, I want to reflect on some things from freshman year, because I can’t reflect on everything and keep you interested at the same time. So, here’s my "Freshman Year Reflection.” (Don’t get too bored).

Let’s start off with the learning. Luther has amazing professors. Professors who are dedicated to helping you improve and learn new things. I enjoy going to class and having my mind blown. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a huge talker. I literally never shut up. The fact that my school has small classes allows me to not only convey my ideas through writing but through participation as well and this is something that I’ve loved having. It’s allowed me to work on my skills as a listener rather than a talker. My favorite lesson that I’ve learned is this; entertain the idea that you’re wrong. No matter what it is. In your search for knowledge, never stop, because, you could be wrong.

Next, the little town that my school is in. I appreciate you. Even though I believe that pizza parlors should be open past 10, I appreciate them being there at all. I love your quirky storybook style downtown. I love your trails that my friends try to force me on. I love that nature is actually appreciated. I love the memories I’ve created in your small town. And, although, on breaks I can’t wait to go to the city with a mall, I can’t wait to get back to you where walks down the street are normal, where it takes hours to get ice cream because only one shop sells it and where the sun is not only seen but observed. You’re the home to my first heartbreak, but either way, I’ll miss you.

Next, the friends that I know will be in my wedding, the friends that I know will attend my wedding, and those friends that will hear about my wedding and send me a little gift. I’m happy I’ve met you. I’m happy to have experienced my first year of college with you all. I’m happy to continue developing our relationships. When I think about the first time I met all of you, my heart stutters. Who knew you would mean so much to me? Who knew we’d be each other’s support system during this crazy year? We forced each other to do a lot of things. Whether diplomatic or plain crazy we made a year to remember. Whether it was cheering our boys on as they defeated Wartburg, persuading prospective students that our school is the right choice, singing along with Parachute, Dancing with The X Ambassadors, late night homework sessions, dancing for those who can’t, or simply binge watching Netflix, we will remember this year and everything we’ve done. That’s insane. One down. Three to go. *Cheers to a successful future*

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
