Freshman year of college was indeed an amazing year. I was finally free from all the small-town drama, free from being bossed around by my parents, free from all of my past mistakes (big and small). I learned all new things, both educational and not. This is why freshman year will be the best of your college experience.
Meeting new people.
Meeting all new people who had no idea who I was, who my family was or anything I did in high school was such a blessing. Growing up in a small town, it's a rare occasion to meet someone new. Going off to college, you meet at least one new person a day. These new people also become your new friends. The new movie marathon watching, snacks on snacks eating, best friends.
Taking up new hobbies.
Before going to my university, I had never ever "crafted," as the sorority girl calls it, and I never did yoga on Sunday mornings. I didn't have time for crafting between high school, all of my extracurriculars and riding throughout town with my besties because there was nothing better to do. Once I got settled into college, I realized I had all this time in between my classes that I could take up all new hobbies.
A new sense of freedom.
This was a blessing and a curse for me. I was so excited that momma wasn't there to hold my hand throughout everything and she wasn't there to boss me around and tell me not to leave a cup in my bedroom. On the downside, my momma wasn't there to hold my hand throughout everything - like the first time I got sick and didn't have her to take me to the doctor or baby me. Also, the cups in my room piled up. This is when you learn to become truly responsible for yourself - or when you don't learn. It could go either way.
Finding new social media platforms to make friends.
I found out just how important it was to network. Creating a LinkedIn made me feel so professional and grown up. The same could be said about Yik Yak and Tinder... Very professional sites.
Becoming a whole new version of yourself.
Your freshman year of college is the time that you get to completely reinvent yourself. All of your past mistakes no longer matter, they no longer "define you" like they did in high school. You can be whoever you want to be. You want to be a concert-going hipster? Be one. You want to go from a straight-C student to a straight-A student? You can do that.
Long story short, your freshman year of college is the best year of college. It's because this year is full of newness and adventure and new friends and figuring out just who you are. All four years are some of the best years, but I'm partial to the freshman year. It was in fact my favorite year of college.
