Dear Freshman,
You are moved into your dorm, getting settled in, and learning how to be on your own. You are pretty much the only ones on campus for a week; this is called Transition Week. Now, you may be wondering why you have this week long event; well this is to give you a chance to learn the traditions, get to know the campus even better, develop relationships within your hall, and begin to find your place at Tarleton State.
Transition week is what you make of it. I know getting up in the mornings to join your fellow classmates in dances, learning chants, and going to seminars is not your ideal thing to do; however, it is really a great experience. Take advantage of learning the chants because they will come in handy at games. Learn the dances because you would be surprised how often you hear those songs. And most importantly get to know your traditions and what makes Tarleton State the best kept secret in Texas. Whether you are learning the snake dance to who the Purple Poo are and what their purpose is. TSU has so many traditions and spirit organizations that motivate you to truly Bleed Purple. Also, once you learn the Color Song forwards and backwards be prepared to sing it so loud at every game whether we win or lose with pride.
Transition week is your chance to become a part of something greater than yourself. Tarleton State is the best choice I made and I know many people who can agree with me. You may not know everyone but we are a big family when it comes to supporting our teams, organizations and coming together when a member of our family has fallen whether you knew them or not. During transition week you will see that Tarleton State is much more than just a college, it is a home; a place where you can feel safe and be yourself. My first year was one of the best years of my life so let me tell you when transition week is the start of it all.
Some of my closet friends lived in my hall, and we all came to know each during that first week when we spent every moment with one another. Therefore, during T-week get to know the people on your hall because after all they will always be there and you would be surprised at the friendships that you are going to make. I know the friends I made that were my hall-mates are some of the best people who have ever walked into my life. So take advantage of that first week y'all get to spend together, because once school starts it becomes harder to spend time together based on class schedules. Also, get to know your Residential Leader, they will be there for you no matter the time of the day or the situation.
Finally, take T-week and truly learn from it. Do not take it for granted because after all, it is the beginning of your first year in college. Learn the dances, chants and traditions. Have fun, enjoy the little things, and wear your colors with pride.
XO,
Sophomore
