Yes I'm A Freshman; Yes I'm A College Transfer

"If you're a freshman, why are you a transfer?"

It is only the second week of classes and so many people have come to me to ask, "You're a freshman; why are you a transfer?" They come up to me like it is taboo, or wrong.

I'm sorry that I did not find comfort and wanted more from a college than the school I was at could offer me. As an indecisive and confused first-year student, my mind was constantly changing and all I could think about is where can I explore more options?

I wanted a sense of exploration and academic freedom and the only place I knew I could find this was at a state school, rather than the small college I was attending at the time.

As an English major, and a person who loves to write, I wanted a larger program with more courses offered for literature and writing than the simple ones that I would be required to take as requirements for my major. I want the opportunity to express myself through writing and learn about the world through reading, so I knew it was time to find a program that could offer me all the writing and reading courses possible, to hopefully guide me towards my future major and future career after graduation.

So yes, I am a freshman and yes I am a college transfer student, but I changed schools to better my future and help me navigate towards my major and career at a larger and world renowned institution.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
