15 Words Of Wisdom For Incoming Freshman

A letter to a younger me.

15 Words Of Wisdom For Incoming Freshman
Katherine Sondrol

The start of a new school year often sparks a sense of nostalgia. Feelings of reflection, regret, and pondering the great "What if?" plague my mind at this time of year. As I watch fresh faces arrive to campus, I think back to my own self when I started college.

She's timid, staring at her shoes, stuck in her head, and scrambling for a way out. Here are a few things I wish I could say to her.

1. Believe it or not, everyone is just as nervous as you are.

Just because they don't show it, doesn't mean it's not true.

2. People are going to assume you're a freshman for the next four years.

You might as well get used to constantly being offered tours of the campus.

3. Don't be ashamed of packing too much.

No matter what your brother says.

4. You're not going to need half of the things you brought with you.

Bring them anyway.

5. No matter what you do, your dorm isn't going to feel just like home, and that's OK.

Don't try to bring home to school with you. Take time to make this place a new home in its own way. Make memories, form attachments, live in the here and now.

6. You're not as awkward as you think.

I mean, of course you're awkward. But guess what: everyone is. Don't let it cripple you.

7. Don't straighten your hair so much.

And, on that note, don't wear makeup until you feel that you don't have to. Take steps to feel good about who you are and how God made you.

8. Don't be afraid to talk about your anxiety.

Talking about it will both put it in perspective and help you make connections.

9. It's OK to drift away from high school friendships.

It's inevitable. You'll be exhausted if you try to keep up with each and every one of them. Put your effort into the ones that are worth it. These are the ones that you'll want to last.

10. Be brave when making new ones.

Look up. Make eye contact. Don't assume you're inferior to those around you. Just try to be yourself and breathe.

11. Take more time for yourself.

School, activities, even friends, can wait. These are the years to learn as much as you can about yourself.

12. Not every friendship you make will last.

And that's OK. But it shouldn't stop you from appreciating them while they do.

13. Going to a conservative Christian school is not a bad thing.

Ignore those who say otherwise. You will learn, you will grow, and you will be challenged.

14. You don't know everything.

You don't think you think so, but you do. Yes, you do. Stop it. Be open to new things, ideas, and most importantly, correction.

15. God's not done with you yet.

I promise you, He's right there with you in the thick of it, working on you, shaping you, and guiding you. Don't believe for one second that He's left you. Remember what's true.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
