Free the Nipple is a gender equality movement that opposes sexualizing women for their bodies. Nina Fresco decided to direct a film, "Free the Nipple," after questioning why a woman's nipple is so controversial. It is completely legal for women to go topless in most states. Tennessee, Utah and Indiana have laws stating that the showing of a female breast is completely illegal. If a man can be shirtless and not get stared at, why can't women? Fresco questioned, "Why can you show public beheadings from Saudi Arabia on Facebook, but not a nipple? Why can you sell guns on Instagram, but yet they will suspend your account for posting the most natural part of a woman's body?"
Many women have taken it upon themselves to join this campaign/movement, by throwing away their bras and letting the nips be free. All over social media you will find women expressing their admiration for this movement by joining this feminist act. If you search #FreeTheNips or #FreeTheNipple, you will discover a realm of feminists who are truly empowered by living as human and not feeling like they are a sexual object in the eyes of society. Many celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevinge believe breasts are a gift that enables women to feed their children, not just a sexual object.
This movement excites me, because women are standing up for what they believe in, even if it defies the "standards" of normalcy in society. A lot of women believe that being modest is the best example for having respect for themselves. Other women think that their body should not be hidden and having respect means not being scared to show off what they were given. Some women find power and respect in modesty. Others find it in freeing the nips or nudity. We should respect all women, regardless of how they dress. Women are powerful creatures who should not be looked down upon based on how they feel empowered.
