The pH of this bathroom must be 7, because it's (gender) neutral! (Chemistry humor)
As many of you may already know, Target recently released information about their "gender neutral bathrooms." They stated on their website that they are making a stand for inclusively and that they do not wish to discriminate or offend any guest, employee or community. Their stores and facility locations are now advocating for members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community to use the bathroom in which they feel most comfortable. For those of you who don't already know, transgender means that a person born to a certain sex may not identify or conform to that specific gender. Take Bruce Jenner, for example, he was born a man, but his true soul didn't identify with the male gender. Being transgender is difficult on its own, let alone the discrimination from society.
I believe that it is your God-given right to feel however you wish to feel. If you're a woman trapped in a man's body, then be that woman, and vice versa. Going to the bathroom is a relatively simple task. You just walk into the door that suits your gender. Well, this can be confusing for the member of the trans community, as they are unsure which bathroom that they should use. Target has now made the situation painless and simple: Use the bathroom in which you feel you identify with. Simple, easy solution right? Well...maybe not so simple.
The issue is not the transgender community. The only possible issue is with sick individuals, who are more than likely going to take advantage of this new situation. If you feel more comfortable using the ladies restroom as a transgender individual, then by all means use it. I can see how this relatively simple and beneficial solution can turn south very quickly. In bathrooms that have multiple stalls, such as Target, there is a possibility that someone of the opposite sex can walk in and spy on unsuspecting individuals. Perverts, who would otherwise not be allowed the chance, can peep on women, children and even men. Concerns are not with the transgender community, but with the average sicko who now has the chance to become a peeping Tom, or worse. In places where there is only one stall or a single unit bathroom, this isn't going to become an issue. Places like small gas stations and private businesses usually have one bathroom with one stall for each gender. The possible fear isn't based on the individuals who simply with to use the bathroom in peace.
I commend Target for their accommodations to these individuals of the community. It wasn't easy, and many people are unhappy with their decision. A recorded one million customers have decided to boycott the Target over something as simple as a bathroom. If you using a bathroom at a supermarket makes you that uneasy, maybe you should go somewhere else. The LGBT community has made its mark on America, and we should learn to accept everyone no matter what sexual orientation, gender, etc. We live in a new generation of acceptance and love, not hate and discrimination. Be who you want to be, and pee where you want to pee.
