Frank Ocean came into the music scene and blew our minds. Songs like Lost, Thinkin' Bout You, and Super Rich Kids was everything everyone wanted and needed. People crazed about his music for the longest time and we felt like we found the gem of R&B music for years to come. His debut album sold at the same rate as fellow R&B sensations, Usher and Chris Brown, when they released their debut albums. So you would think, we probably found our next big name for the music industry. We couldn't wait to hear what he had next for us!
But four years later, we're still waiting.Channel Orange, his debut album, released on July 10th, 2012. Following the impressive debut for the musician, he's basically done nothing. Just a couple singles to his name and a couple featured tracks.
COME ON MAN!!?? What are you doing to us??
I mean, so many things have happened in the music industry since we last heared Frank Ocean sing about poppin' champagne with super rich kids.
- Artists like FUN., Pharrell Williams, La Roux, and Foster the People rose and fell faster than a rollercoaster ride.
- Miley Cyrus went off the rails with Bangerz and jumped on a twerk-fest with Robin Thicke at the VMA's.
- Artists like Taylor Swift, Drake, and Justin Bieber have grown to astronomical fame.
- Speaking of, Taylor Swift went from a cute little country singer to the world's most well-known pop singer (plus, wrote the nationally recognized song for turning 22 years old that you have to play 50 billion times).
- Beyoncé broke the internet with her spontaneous release of her self-titled album, Beyoncé.
- One Direction started their fanatical career as a group and Zane already left the group to do better music.
- The Jonas Brothers officially broke up and Nick Jonas became a sensation.
- DJ Khaled became a philosopher to a new generation.
- Justin Timberlake came back to the music industry and released THE 20/20 Experience.
- And literally, the world didn't even know about artists like Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Sam Smith, Bastille and Lorde.
COME ON MAN!!?? Why haven't we heard this new album??
Well don't worry, it's going to come out...eventually. If you look on his website, you'll see that he has a library card.
There are multiple dates here and when you look at the bottom, you'll find the new album title, Boys Don't Cry. There are so many date changes for the potential release. WE COULD'VE HAD THIS ALBUM LAST YEAR????
COME ON MAN!!!!
But you know what, the drama of a sudden music album drop has been a recent style currently used by artists. As mentioned before, Beyoncé released her self-titled album at the drop of a hat. And just this year, Rihanna, Adele, and Kanye West released new albums in a similar fashion.
So yes, it may be annoying for music fans across the world, but because of social media and the lightning fast-pace that information travels, this avenue of big-name musicians is quite lucrative and much less expensive. It lets the fan base promote the music for them instead of the musician having to do all the work. Let the work speak for itself.
Frank Ocean is probably just going for the drama card with his new album. But here's a thought Frank...IT'S BEEN FOUR FREAKIN' YEARS!!! It's not like you were a one-hit wonder! Your whole debut album is practically great. So come on, stop being a tease and just give the people what they want. Alright? Please?
