About 95 percent of people I know are part of a sorority or fraternity. That means I hear about greek things all throughout my day. It almost makes me wish I joined a sorority, but at the end of the day, I know I am just as happy being a non-greek. Here’s why:
1. Sororities and fraternities have a lot of drama.
I am a drama-free person. I wouldn’t know what to do if there was a fight between two sisters or if someone didn’t show up to chapter. Some of the altercations in greek organizations seem quite petty and time wasting. I would much rather spend time with my drama-free friends.
2. You have more time on your hands.
Chapter, socials and charity events are all very time consuming. As a busy student with a job, I don’t have time for that. Being a part of a sorority or fraternity comes with an excess of responsibility, and I just do not have the time or motivation for that.
3. Hearing about Greek stuff all the time.
Don’t get me wrong, I love all of my greek friends dearly, but sometimes I don’t care about who yelled at who during chapter or how someone wore a navy dress instead of black to initiation. I like having conversations with people who do not spend the entire time talking about how their fraternity is so much better than the other. I have nothing to contribute to that conversation.
4. You don't have to like everyone.
The amazing thing about being non-greek is that when you don’t like someone, you don’t have to be around them. If you are in a sorority or fraternity and dislike your sister or brother, too bad. You are forced to be with them for four years of your life.
I understand not all sororities and fraternities are like this because this is the worst-case scenario. Being a part of a supportive organization with loving brothers and sisters sounds very rewarding, and sometimes I do wish I joined. Unfortunately, I just do not have the time or patience. I very much enjoy my quiet, drama-free, non-greek life.
