One of the best things about pursuing my major is getting the chance to work towards the career I want in the near future. My days of taking my university required classes, and forcing me to study fields I have no interest in are behind me. Now, when I tell people that I am a communications major, I know each of the courses I take is bringing me one step closer to my career. However, I still get asked why I chose such a broad a field. So, I have made a list describing why I am a communications major.
1. Faculty
One thing that has me coming back, again and again, is the faculty. When going into these upper division courses, the most reassuring thing is knowing that the professors are there to help me succeed. Whenever the material gets tough, I have a reliable source to help me understand what I am learning and why. Even after I have completed a class with a professor, I still find myself stopping by to strike up a conversation with them.
Like any other college at Washington State, the College of Communications also provides internships outside the classroom that could make or break your resume. If you show the drive to push yourself, professors are always happy to help you get them.
2. Extra-Curricular
Cable 8 and KUGR are some of the extracurricular activities I have invested my time and effort into. They have provided a lot of experience I would not get in the classroom. The long hours I spent with our cast and crew taught me life lessons that I will always take with me.
3. Connections
The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication has a solid alumni base. A lot have worked in broadcast journalism, but some individuals work in entertainment. For example, one of the producers of the television show "Orange is the New Black" is a Cable 8 alumni. The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication has a reputation for producing the best in the industry. The name alone opens a lot of doors if you are willing to go that extra mile.
4. Hard work Paying Off
One of the best and scariest feelings is knowing that my success after graduation is based on all the work I put in now. A common saying I have heard since my freshman year was that, "Everyone can get a job with a communications degree." However, not everyone can get a career in it. My goal is not to just graduate, but to excel in my career well after graduation.
4. In Conclusion
Despite all the criticism I may receive for being a communication major, everything that comes with being in my major has kept me pursing my career.
