Forget The Destination; Enjoy The Journey

When you're hung up on your future, remember these beautiful things in front of you right now.

Forget The Destination; Enjoy The Journey

At some point in our lives, we’ll find ourselves strapped for cash, single and wishing for love, confused about our careers and/or generally unsure about our next move. Some people will look to horoscopes or palm readings as a “quick fix” and hope to catch a glimpse into the future. Others get hung up on every detail of their every move, so concerned that they could be making a tiny mistake.

The problem with this? We miss the beauty that lies directly in front of our faces.

To cite a worn out cliché, we really do need to stop and smell the roses. Things so simple like petting your dog’s velvety fur, savoring that first sip of coffee and enjoying the feeling of just-brushed teeth usually always make us feel good, but we tend to take those moments for granted because we can be too focused on the long-term big picture.

If you’re finding yourself in one of these situations now, here are some thoughts on ways to recognize and enjoy the good that is right in front of you.

If you are worried about your financial situation, stop and think about what you have already. Easier said than done, but I am willing to bet you have a house full of things that some other person would kill to have. Somehow, some way, you will manage to make rent. In the meantime, remaining worried likely will not help the situation. Doing something that does not cost anything, like digging out your polish and painting your nails or going outside and playing basketball, can help remind you that there is a wonderful life outside of your finances.

If you are worried you will be single forever, remember that trying to find love usually never works. Visit your parents or call your best friend and totally immerse yourself in those conversations at that moment. Hear every word they are saying and take a genuine interest. Laugh with them because it feels good. Surround yourself with great company and remember that loving yourself and your own life must always happen before you can settle into a good romantic relationship, anyway.

If you are worried you will never find the right job, think about what you are passionate about right now. Instead of spending time worrying about whether or not that hiring manager will email you back next week, go now and finish knitting that scarf you have been itching to complete. That may inspire you to knit more scarves, sell them on Etsy and make an income in a totally unexpected way.

Lastly, if you struggle to envision what your life will look like a week, a month, or a year from now, then stop. You are a uniquely special person with so many gifts right in front of you. These could be that big, new, cozy mattress you just bought or that little sister who is your very best friend. Think about everything you are blessed with at this very moment, and remember that your life is pretty darn awesome.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
