At 19 we’re supposed to have it all figured out. For many of us we are now gearing into our second year of college. We’ve taken the prerequisite courses, we went out one too many times more than we should have, and we dated that one person that wasn’t so good for us. But now you’re 19, you’re not that young, naïve 18-year-old you once were. Coming back home from your first year at school you return to the excessive amount of questions at family cookouts and social gatherings about your major, about your significant other (or lack thereof), and what you plan on doing for the rest of your life. Let the truth be told, YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE DOING, and that is okay.
It’s unrealistic to think that we should know what we want to do ten years down the road, because I'm not sure about you but I can’t even decide what coffee I want to order at Starbucks. It’s even more unrealistic to think that we are not going to screw up again like we did our freshman year. We are going to go out on a Thursday when we have a class on Friday—it’s inevitable—but this time we will make sure we set our alarm (baby steps). Of course, we should always learn from our mistakes, but now is the time for new mistakes!
This is the time of our lives to adventure and explore everything about ourselves. We’ve haven’t even lived ¼ of our entire life, so we need to make sure to make the most of it, because this is the only time we will have this much freedom. You are not just paying an unhealthy amount of money each year for a piece of paper, but you are figuring out who you really want to be. College is about finding out who you truly are, and how can we do that if we pick a major our first semester when we’ve only taken a handful of classes? If you have your heart set on one thing, but think that astrology would be kick ass, then try it! Take classes that seem interesting and intriguing. Challenge yourself in ways that you never deemed possible. Do not get discouraged just because someone else may seem to have it all together, this does not mean that you are behind. Some people find their spark and passion sooner than others, but your time will come. Inspiration comes in the most subtle packages, until then embrace being 19 and carefree, and you will find yourself and passion along the way.
