Suffering from those “post-abroad blues”? Did you just get back from your summer Birthright trip? Or maybe you’re just craving a taste of the Mediterranean? Whatever it is, Naf Naf Grill will undoubtedly satisfy that craving.
First, let’s talk style. What could be better than Chipotle minus the Mexican, plus the Mediterranean? When you enter Naf Naf, you'll find an assembly line of ingredients. Similar to chipotle, you'll select your base, either pita or a bowl. A bowl could be filled with salad, rice, or hummus. Regardless of your choice, you then go on to determine which main ingredient will suit you. Gluten free or vegetarian? Go for the falafel. The perfectly crispy chickpea balls will have you fooled that they weren't made by some Israeli grandmother. If you're into meat, indulge in either the chicken or steak shawarma. The quality of the meat is high-calibar and will not disappoint. Pulling the bowl all together is the endless array of “salads and garnishes.” The options consist of chopped salad, purple cabbage salad, sumac onions, and pickles. Some may find the most exciting part of the meal to be adding a savory, sweet, or spicy finish to your bowl. A variety of sauces include traditional tahini, garlic sauce, s’khug, and fire sauce, which is a blazing salsa-type garnish, but delicious nonetheless. If you're still feeling hungry after the bowl, Naf Naf also offers sides such as basmati rice and fries,
When overhearing one of my friends describe Naf Naf to a potential customer, the words she murmured went something along the lines of, “Hummus is the new guac.” You know how everyone complains about guacamole being extra at Chipotle, but purchases it nonetheless, since the consistency and flavor is just irresistible? That’s how you'll feel about the hummus at Naf Naf. Yes, they will charge you extra for it. But yes, it will be worth it. Especially if you want to dip your warmly baked in-house pita into a dip. You definitely will not want to pass up the pita, as you can literally watch the chef making them freshly in front of your eyes.
The space is pleasing. It’s clean and modern looking inside and there’s an option to sit either inside or outside, which is perfect on these crisp fall days. The service is satisfying, as the servers do not second guess you when you awkwardly request more onions or sauces. The employees are extremely amiable and helpful.
What is so great about this meal is that it is time efficient, reasonably priced, and fills you up for a lunch or dinner option. It’s an exceptional choice for those vegetarians looking for a new spot on State Street or those who just want a taste of the Mediterranean in a clearly tempting Chipotle-like setting.
