Flaw: an imperfection or weakness and especially one that detracts from the whole or hinders effectiveness
This definition by Merriam Webster is considered to be the best and most accepted way to describe a flaw. Although many people believe that flaws define us in a bad way, I see the exact opposite: I see flaws as a beautiful, unique way to individualize people.
As humans, it is in our nature to be born with imperfections, and our flaws develop over time.
Most people tend to believe that flaws are awful and try to get rid of theirs everyday, but nothing ever changes. We are meant to have imperfections that make us who we are as unique individuals.
I twirl my hair excessively. I obnoxiously talk with my hands. I have such small thumbs I never give a thumbs up to anyone. I never learned how to swim or ride a bike. I am terrified of messing up anything. I am overly emotional. I feel the need to always have everything be perfect. I have unrealistic expectations.
I am flawed.
Although there is an endless list of quirks, imperfections, and weaknesses, each one of these define me. I know there are certain flaws that people remember about me in such a positive way, such as my tendency to talk with my hands or twirl my hair, and this that actually gives me confidence to be who I am. They have made me see that even though what I do isn't always the best, it makes me special in my own way. I see flaws as positive defining characteristics that set us apart from one another.
Once we start looking at flaws in a positive light, we are able to give ourselves the confidence we need to be exactly we they are, exactly who we are meant to be. We are born with certain abilities and characteristics that make us who we are, so why not embrace everything about ourselves rather than change or put ourselves down?
Flaws are what help define us in more positive ways than I think most people realize. We are born with certain imperfections which, in turn, make us perfect since we are who we're meant to be as imperfect human beings. So, let us fully embrace each of our characteristics and abilities, and realize that although we may want to be taller, thinner, or more beautiful, we are perfect in our own way. Other people are striving to have the capabilities and characteristics we already have, so why not be proud of who we were meant to be and accept our flaws for their unique, beautiful qualities?
I am proud of my flaws and of all my defining characteristics. I am proud of my quirkiness. I am proud of knowing there is no else like me.
I know I am complete with all of my imperfections, despite how Merriam Webster may define me with them. One day I hope you are just as proud of your "flaws" too.
