It's finally here, the time of the year that everyone looks forward to, a time of relaxation, warmth, good times and less stress. It's summer!
For those in college, it's a time to catch up with old friends from home, hang out with friends from school (or at least try to) and maybe work a summer job or two. However, by the end of summer, it's inevitable that we'll be counting down the days until we're back on campus. Home life and summer's slow pace can get old after a bit. However, instead of just sitting around this summer waiting for it to get that point, there are ways to make these three months the most rewarding of your life so far. And no, it's not about hitting up every musical festival known to man. It's about bettering yourself.
So, without further ado, here are five ways to make this the most rewarding summer ever.
1. Become more cultured.
Many people choose summertime to study abroad, travel and expand their horizons. However, just because you're not halfway across the world doesn't mean you can't become more cultured. Watch the news over an episode of KUWTK every once in a while. Read novels from different time periods and different places. Travel somewhere within the U.S., maybe even within your state. Be open to new experiences. You may not head back to school fluent in Spanish or with a new French boyfriend, but you'll have grown and become cultured, as well.
2. Try new things.
Instead of sinking back onto the same old patterns of summers at home, be open and try changing things up. Always go to same concerts with the same people? Maybe head to a concert with a completely different genre of music with different people. Only rely on your mom to cook meals for you? Take a cooking class. Never done something you've always wanted to do? Do it. Step out of your comfort zone this summer.
3. Take time for yourself.
Too often we forget to focus on ourselves during the fun times of summer. Instead of only going out or working, take some time out for yourself. Maybe spend an hour or two working out. Maybe spend a day relaxing, catching up on your favorite show or reading a good book. Maybe a time out to yourself means a good old-fashioned power nap. Whatever time for yourself is for you, take it.
4. Be healthy.
During the school year we find ourselves plagued with sickness, eating unhealthy or not being active like we should. This summer, give your body time to heal and become more healthy. Whether that means resting to give your immune system a fighting chance, eating a bit healthier or starting to work out, do it. Your body deserves to be back in fighting shape.
5. Spend as much time with your family as you do your friends.
This one is pretty straightforward. Sometimes we forget about hanging out with our family and put our plans with friends over them. Try to spend equal amount of time with each, you'll find that both can be rewarding.
There you have it, five ways to make this summer rewarding. Amidst the relaxing, yet somehow still crazy times of summer, if you make time to do these five things, you'll find that by fall you've grown a lot. I'm sure by tailgate season that growth will probably be halted, but hey, better for it to be paused than to not have happened at all.
