Coming to college, there are things you absolutely have to bring and some things you can do without. Here are some things you can do without.
1. Binders, binders, binders.
Most would say this is a personal preference based on the way you stay organized for school best. All college students will say when you are walking across campus, you are going to regret having the three binders in your backpack for the day. Your shoulders will hurt and trying to fit your $100 textbook between all your binders will get complicated. I suggest buying a three subject notebook that has pockets and maybe an extra folder or two for the syllabus. If I was an incoming freshman again, I would save my money on school supplies by purchasing a good agenda. Everyone knows you will use that. And pray my college professors allow note-taking on laptops.
2. One of those lap desks for when you are sitting in bed.
Studying in bed is not the smartest thing to do because
a. You will most likely get distracted thinking you can watch Netflix now and study later.
b. It’s bad for your posture.
c. You will get comfortable and want to take a nap.
3. A million pictures of your friends from home.
You may be thinking I am heartless right now, and I promise I am not. Your friends from home will constantly be on your mind and the distance between you, having to actually call to have a decent conversation, will do some good. Don’t think that just because you don’t have a picture of them on every wall of your room doesn’t mean you don’t miss them. Trust me, you will miss your friends and family more than you thought. Unless, of course, they go to the same school and are right around the corner.
4. A significant other.
You probably listened to multiple people mention how they were going to make long distance work while at college when you were at orientation. You shouldn’t be a Debbie downer and think they will fail because, to everyone’s surprise, they might not. They might make it, but going to college single and making choices for yourself is the best thing you could do. Unless you are in a long-term relationship, do not break that up just because you are going to school. Also remember, don’t go chasing after a relationship because it seems like everyone else has found love. For those of you who are single, enjoy it. There are plenty of other students just like you on your campus.
5. Hand duster and/or cleaning cloth
Honestly, cleaning supplies take up more space than needed. I say you should bring the necessities like a compact vacum, dust pan, broom and Clorox wipes. Those are all items college students will actually use, especially when family is coming to visit. All in all, move-in day is exhausting and the less you have to carry inside, the better. For the rest of summer, you should prioritize your list and figure out what your personal "must haves" are.
