Five Things That Make America Great That Have Nothing to Do With Politics

We may be a nation divided right now, but some things will unify us forever.

Five Things That Make America Great That Have Nothing to Do With Politics

I love politics. I really, really do. It's something I'm incredibly passionate about, and I'll be advocating for the political system till the day I die. However, our country is in divide. There are currently two parties that are fighting for the right to say that they are responsible for making our country the very best it can be (at least, that's what we're hoping for). Today, I'm bringing you a list of things that make America great that have nothing to do with politics.

1. The the diverse selection of food!

One thing that I've always appreciated about living in this country is the amazing selection of food that I can find no matter where I am. It doesn't matter if you want fried Oreos, authentic pad Thai, down home fried chicken and waffles or Italian cuisine that rivals that of your Nonna's, you can find it here in America.

2. From coast to coast, there's culture everywhere.

America is bursting at the seams with culture. On the East Coast, we have a long tradition of roots all the way back to 1776 and beyond. Down south, there are roots deeper than the peach trees that are grown on the very land that wars were fought on. West of Texas, our country is rich with Spanish culture that could put even the most skeptical critics to silence. It's amazing to me that in one single country we can have a representation of so many diverse cultures.

3. We have incredible views no matter where you are.

It literally doesn't matter what corner of the country you're standing on. The West Coast is home to deep blue shores, massive mountains and deserts for miles. The middle of the country shows humbling views of incredible farms and lakes that makes you realize how vast the world really is. The East Coast will show you mountain views that will humble you into oblivion, and beaches that would make even the harshest beach critic fall in love.

4. There are over 311 languages spoken here.

I get that the majority of the time, we all complain when someone's speaking another language that we can't understand. It can be frustrating, especially when it creates more of a language barrier than there should be. However, I find it pretty humbling that there are over 311 languages spoken in the United States. That means that there are at least 311 people from incredibly diverse backgrounds that are all (hopefully) contributing members of society. That to me, is pretty great.

5. At the end of the day, we all deeply care about one another.

We all don't get along, that's for sure. But I know that I can speak for most Americans that if a fellow citizen is in need, I'll be the first to step up to the job. In America, even when we don't get along, we still do our very best to take care of one another on a local (and sometimes even national) level. We fight for the rights of those that can't fight for themselves, and we open our doors to our neighbors when they're in need.

On that note, I'm incredibly proud to be an American. I'm proud to be apart of a country that stands for freedom, justice, and liberty for all. We're great, and it's time we start acting like it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
