Five Things To Remember Going into Recruitment

Whether you're a sister or a freshman, you're probably preparing for sorority recruitment. For potential new members, recruitment is absolutely terrifying. For sisters, it means new littles and additions to family lines. For all women, it means long hours, blisters, and extreme exhaustion.

I've compiled a list of five things for potential new members to keep in mind while going through the process. This is equally as important for sisters, because sometimes we forget where we came from. We all started from the bottom. Now, we're in letters.

1. Trust the process. You’re going to think you’re in love with a sorority, and then they’re going to drop you. That’s lust, not true love. The process -- the sorting hat of sorority girls -- knows this. Love is a two-way street and if they don’t want you, then you shouldn’t want them. In the end, you will be with those who make you happy.

2. If you fake it you won't make it. If you act like someone you’re not, the sisters are going to see right through you. They wont want you in their chapter because you’re a poser and no one likes posers. On the other hand, some girls may think you’re being real and then you’ll join the chapter and have to continue being someone you’re not, which is a lot of unnecessary energy. Be who you are. Sisters appreciate the opportunity to get to know you, even in the short period of time they have to talk. In the end, this really benefits you because you’ll be given a bid to a chapter who likes you for who you are.

3. Wear deodorant. Okay, ladies. Long hours, small rooms. Self explanatory. If you smell you’re probably not getting a bid.

4. Don’t beat them, join them. Don’t think you are cooler than the girls you are talking to. During recruitment you will experience a lot of singing and extreme enthusiasm from the sororities you visit. If you are rolling your eyes at the songs, the pep, and the matching outfits, then maybe sorority life is not for you. Keep in mind, a year from now you could be in their 5-inch patent leather heels.

5. Everyone is equal. Every girl you talk to was once in your position. No one is looking down on you. A mutual respect is expected. You’re talking to your potential lifelong sisters! No stress, no stress girl; you deserve nothing but the best.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
