Every OPA is unique

Being an Orientation Leader opens you up to a crazy world of new faces and school traditions.

Within my two summers as an Orientation Peer Advisor and two springs attending NODA (a conference for Orientation Leaders,) I have realized that every university is unique. Every "OPA Summer" is unique and every program is unique but some things transcend everything.

1. You have your elevator speech memorized, and perfected to the point it should be Oscar nominated.

Hi! My name's Kaitlin Smith. I'm a Junior Media and Communications Major with an American Studies Minor. I am from Cecil County Maryland and am a first generation college student. I'm obsessed with the Maryland flag and I'm involved in a few things on campus including, a long list of activities to make myself seem cooler than I am.

2. There are always nervous students, but nine times out of 10 a mother is more nervous than her student.

Then, you have to tell her at check-in that she is going to be separated from her student all day.

3. When you're up on stage in front of 300 random people and all you have is each other.

Then, if it wasn't awkward enough, you have to sing, make a fool of yourself and not trip across that stage all at the same time.

4. You are obsessed with everyone you work with.

As if it weren't enough that we spend 12 hours out of the day working together, as soon as we all get back to our apartments (which we live in together,) we have to plan what are doing for dinner together or watching on TV together.

5. But we can't forget about the most important thing, the students.

When they succeed, you succeed; especially when you see them make their first friend, get their schedules and even reunite with their parents during the day. But the best part is when you see them during the school year, with a smile on their face, wearing school gear, walking to class and having fun.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
