I have a friend who gives me great advice. She is the one I call when I’m upset about anything from school to work, to boys, to friends, to family, to literally anything and everything in between. And she always tells me that I need to get rid of the “toxic” things in my life. I never really thought of it that way. So recently I decided I need a detox. Trust me, I know how dramatic this sounds, but I guarantee that everything on the following list is a small step that you can take to get rid of the toxins in your life.
1. Be honest.
With yourself and with everyone else. I’ve always been outspoken, blunt, and straight up with people. I don’t like to sugarcoat things, I don’t like to bullsh*t things. To me, honesty and respect go hand in hand. If I respect someone, then I know they deserve the truth. And when someone lies to me, the first thing I think is, 'This person just showed that they don’t have any respect for me.'
2. Do something by yourself.
Go see a movie, go to the beach, take a walk, or go for a drive. Being by myself gives me so much time to just think and focus on what I need to do, rather than being distracted by everyone else’s lives.
3. Get rid of bad relationships.
If there is someone in your life that only brings negativity, cut them out. Delete their number and unfollow them on social media. Don’t keep tabs on their life anymore. Also, don’t put yourself in situations where you know they will have the opportunity to make you feel bad. Focus on the good relationships you have and continue to build new ones.
4. Do things that make you happy.
We all know that things like school and work are sort of unavoidable. You do what you have to do. But it’s really important to offset the things you have to do with the things you want to do.
5. Surround yourself with people who make you the best version of yourself.
This point is extremely important. Have people that support you, care about you, and have your back. Have people that make you laugh until you cry, or make you laugh when you feel like you’re going to cry. Get rid of those who make you second guess yourself.
