Ahhh, the double-edged sword that is dated functions. For the lucky ones, it is a simple decision of who they will choose as their date. They'll take their boyfriend if he lives close by or goes to the same school or maybe they'll take a guy they've been talking to all semester. But for the unfortunate ones, it could feel like the time leading up to prom all over again. It can be stressful at times, and there are stages one goes through as the time of the date draws nearer.
1. Denial
This could be a lot to take in at first. You are sitting at chapter, and then you hear something along the lines of, “We're going to go snow tubing." Before you could muster up the fun thoughts and the sisterly bonding that will entail, you hear the words, “... and it's a dated function." Did she just say dated function? Yes, by all of the nervous glances around the room, I believe she did say dated function. But maybe I heard her wrong? Or maybe it is announced that formal is coming up. But I feel like we just had one? Did we have it this early in the semester before? Could there be another one already?
2. Anger
The whole process can lead some people to be a little temperamental. Why didn't I start mingling more at socials?! My only option right now is that cute boy from my English class that I always make eye contact with. But the most we've talked is when he asked me what the date was before our test that one time.
Ugh, why are dated functions even a thing?!
3. Bargaining
OK, so you have reached the point when you need to start making some moves. You start telling yourself that you will start talking more at socials for a potential date, or maybe you'll end up taking one of your best guy friends that you know you will have a super fun and easygoing time with. You also keep in mind that you could just take one of your best gals as a solid Plan B if all else fails.
4. Sadness
Not having a go-to option for a date can leave people feeling less than great. It gives you time to evaluate the current situation. Maybe you start thinking about the lack of options or that the guy you took last time is now the run-quickly-in-the-opposite-direction-whenever-you-see-him guy. You may also fear the possibility that you will be left completely dateless. It can give some people the feels.

5. Acceptance
The time comes (finally) when you just stop stressing. Dated functions are meant to be a time of fun — not stress! This is when one remembers that it's really not that serious and everything will work out. So maybe you'll end up taking your future husband, that cool guy you have had a couple conversations with, a guy friend who will ensure a fun time or your best girlfriend! Whoever you decide on, you are going to have a great night, and that is all that matters.
