To my fellow unattached ladies and gentlemen out there, I would just like to say, Congrats! You made it through another year of singlehood and are almost through all the holidays where people are constantly asking you if you are dating anyone!
1) New Years is synonymous with "party" or for lack of a better word "turn up". Who knows how to party harder than single people? NO ONE.
2) When you're in a relationship, your night is pretty much planned out. Nothing exciting to twist and turn your plans. You know where you are going, with whom you are going with, and you are well aware of who you will be sharing that midnight kiss with. There are no surprises! When you're single, you can choose to do whatever you want and the special moment at midnight may take you by complete surprise. Sometimes the most memorable nights are the ones that we do not expect.
3) You can avoid the pressure of this holiday. When you are in a relationship, New Years expectations are high. You expect nothing less than a raging night, formal attire, a nice dinner, champagne, pictures, and for those ambitious individuals: a proposal. When you are single, you can dress up however you want (without needing to coordinate and match outfits with anyone), take shots on top of shots (obviously the classy way to go), and make a fancy dinner for a party of one (dating yourself is the best because you know exactly what you enjoy)!
4) You can kiss whoever you want at midnight... or no one at all! When you have dozens of people around you that are single as well on this day, you can pick from your surroundings of who you want to share that kiss with! You can finally smooch that bartender you've been staring at all night, your best friend, that guy or gal you met next to the bathroom an hour ago, the office cat... whoever! The choice is yours! And who is to say you have to kiss anyone?! Lock lips with the top of that wine bottle instead!
5) You get to enjoy the onset of the New Year with the person who matters the most... YOU! You know you can always rely on yourself for anything. This is a time to enjoy that special moment to appreciate how far you have come in life and celebrate the fact that you get to spend another year working on improving yourself!
New Years is highly overrated and jam-packed with expectations of transcending magical moments that never play out as planned. It is really just another day of the year the media perpetuates as being a couply, romantic, formal celebration that everyone should partake in. It makes those who are single feel even worse about their singlehood than they do on Valentine's Day. But year after year, New Years has proven to simply give us hangovers and glitter in all the places the sun don't shine. Be proud being you and if you have no one to share this day with, sharing it with yourself isn't so bad either. After all, YOU are the most important in our life and that is something worth celebrating.
