Whether that shopping urge just won’t go away or you actually haven’t bought jeans in two years, everyone needs to shop at some point. That’s easier said than done when your bank account balance is screaming at you “please stop treating yourself!” That being said, there are a few ways to pinch pennies that aren’t as well known as they should be. That student ID of yours? Turns out it gets you more than just swipe access. And there are dupes for clothing items just like there are for lipsticks. Never spend more than you have to, especially when you can’t afford to.
1. PacSun
Think of PacSun as Urban Outfitters, but with way more sales and BOGO. The store has the same laid back feel as the crazy expensive name brands that fill Urban, but it won’t leave you feeling guilty for not getting a job this semester. They also have different sales going on all the time, so you never have to pay full price for anything in the store. Plus, their new rewards program gives you “cash” to spend back in the store once you reach a certain number of points.
2. Nordstrom Rack
If you’ve been eyeing those Hunter boots or that Michael Kors bag, but really can’t bring yourself to spend that much money on just one item, check out Nordstrom Rack. The store carries all of the same brands that Nordstrom does, but at a heavily discounted price. Since everything is last season (as if anyone actually cares about that kind of stuff) you can actually afford to buy the brands you’ve been wanting for months. They sell everything from Nike to Free People to American Apparel so basically you have no excuse to buy something name brand for full price ever again.
3. UniDays
So apparently all those major corporations take pity on college students for paying thousands of dollars a year in tuition because there is an entire site dedicated to discounts for students (and yes, it is completely legal). Just make a free account on their website and suddenly you are getting upwards of 35% off your favorite brands such as Roxy, Levi’s, and Wildfox. The site also alerts you to sales exclusive to students, such as Apple’s annual student sale on their technology products. There are also smaller websites that offer student discounts through Unidays as well, so be sure to check there before ordering anything online!
4. Retail Me Not
You know those annoying popups on websites or when a cashier asks you right at checkout “do you want to sign up for our email?” Well, of course you say no. We already get enough emails as it is as students, we don’t need more. Sadly, those emails also include all the coupons that would save us tons of money if we actually received them. Well, Retail Me Not happens to be a convenient site that has all of those promo codes and coupons in one place. There’s no catch either. You don’t have to sign up for any account or give any information. Just search the store you’re shopping at and see if they have any coupons circulating. Easy as that. It’s a super quick and a noncommittal way to save some money.
5. Thrift Stores
Never pay more than $10 for a flannel or graphic t-shirt. Just don’t do it. Do not buy a $50 flannel when you can get almost the exact one at a thrift store after an hour of sifting through the men’s section. And the graphic t-shirt section at thrift stores is gold. Some of the funniest and most unique shirts are found there. They are already soft and broken in and most of them only cost of couple dollars. Although you will probably have to commit more of your time to a thrift store than you would to a more expensive and brand new equivalent, you will save a ton of money.Just because you are a broke college student doesn't mean you have to dress like one.
