Five Optimisms To Life On A Budget
We Know Your Dreams
There is a pivotal moment in our lives where the value of money sets in and developing a budget becomes a necessity. Whether you're saving for an apartment, your education, or creating a sense of financial stability, there are many silver linings to limiting your spending.

1.) Creating a reliable savings account

To begin your budget, figure out how much money you need as the bare minimum for living. Then start to allocate money monthly into a savings account. This will provide security for future expected and unexpected costs. Overtime, watching your account expand will be more satisfying than spending it on unnecessary purchases.

2.) Knowing when you are secure enough to splurge

Once you have created a functional budget, one that allows you to live comfortably, you can slowly allow yourself to spend on things that would've otherwise broke the bank. Waking up and deciding you want to treat yourself to a bagel and coffee, or going to your favorite store and buying a new shirt and not feeling plagued with guilt is a gratifying experience.

3.) Learning how to be happy without spending money

In the midst of limiting your spending you will slowly learn how to create a happy life that doesn't require spending money. Simple things such as hanging out with friends, going for a run, or reading a book will add to your "limited spending" mantra. Soon you will have a reliable bank account, and new ideas for an enjoyable time.

4.) Gaining a sense of independency

Starting to learn the ropes of budgeting early on will relieve the stress of adulthood, when being financially stable becomes a necessity. You will start to find yourself paying for groceries, rent, textbooks, etc. Eventually you'll realize that you have become a self sufficient young adult and a sense of independency will set in. When relying on parents for financial aid ceases, pride creeps in and stability becomes habit.

5.) Maintaining peace of mind

All of the aforementioned optimisms will overall, lead to a grander peace of mind, and a more stress free lifestyle. When you feel financially secure, you can begin to think about the future with an open mind, lacking limitations. Being able to have fun without spending money, while simultaneously being able to splurge affordably from time to time will provide you with a sense of control over your life and money.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
